Idle Problem 1999 Alero GLX

I have a 1999 GLX 3.4 L and I just started having an issue with a high idle. The car is idling at 3100 K in neutral. I'm thinking that the idle control sensor is or has gone bad. Has anyone else seen this problem? Also is this something I could fix without too much pain and suffering.

My manual says the IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve controls the idle speed, so it's likely that it could be the problem. The IAC is controlled by the Power Control Module and it could also be the problem, but isn't as likely. There are some tests that can be done without a scanner, but they may not be definitive. You could probably take it to Autozone and see if they can get the codes to tell you what's wrong. If it is the IAC, I would suggest you get a Haynes Manual for about $15. The replacement of the IAC is covered pretty well. It doesn't look too tough, but it's too much to post here and there are some pretty handy tips included. It also gives you some tips about cleaning your current IAC, which could fix the whole problem without having to replace it. Could save you some money over having to pay someone else to do it. The Haynes Manual isn't the best there is, but it does have some useful information.

I think you are right about cleaning. The problem went away when I started the car back up later that day. The night before and that morning it rained very hard and was quite foggy, so I'm thinking moister had something to do with this. At least I have a point to start from should the problem return.
