legal stuff... if you know stuff about legality of titles and whatnot respond please
alright here is the deal...
one kid I know (not really my friend, just somebody at school) tells me that he knows of a 79 Trans Am complete and in good condition for sale for $400, this sounds too good to be true, right? well the catch is, there is no title... so I am thinking that maybe it's stolen at this point, but the kid insists that its not, this is his story, his friend's dad owns some like auto body or whatever in the city next to my town, he says this guy brought the Trans Am in to get whatever done to it, drops it off, leaves, you know... but while he is gone, the guy who owns the Trans Am goes to jail and then dies... so this other guy still has the Trans Am at the shop, but no title... what do you guys think about this situation, I mean for $400 I am willing to buy a stolen vehicle in this good shape as long as I can get away with it, my one friend jokingly said I should find another 79 Trans Am in a junkyard and switch the VINs... I would have to get a salvage title definitely, does anybody know how this stuff works in New Jersey and what I can do to get this car to be mine... thanks a bunch |

Please don't use the forums to discuss how to obtain a car illegally. Use PM's if you want to.
I say go about this the legal way. You don't want to get busted down the road. Even though the guy was put in jail, and passed away. The car still belongs to someone, and that someone is not the shop, or you. You need to get the VIN and have the local PD run it. You don't need to walk in to do that, and shit, you could even call from a pay phone if you're worried. If they say it has not been reported stolen. You are good so far. But again, the shop still does not own that car. The guys next of kin does. So legally, they own the car, whether they know about it or not. I would then try to contact them. Just tell them the car has been abandoned. Hell, you could even tell them there is a large fee payable for storage. Chances are they would say. Well, if its a junker, with a big fee due, we don't want it. Then get them to sign something, even get it notarized, handing the car over to you (or the shop). If that turns up empty, and there is no next of kin to be found. To my knowledge, all states have a few forms you need to fill out to obtain ownership of an abandoned vehicles. I know Utah does. A friend of mine had to do this to obtain an old motorcycle that was left when his renters moved out. But not having a title is not that big of a deal, as long as it is all legit. Overall. Do this the legal way. I for one, I couldn't drive a car knowing it was not obtained truthfully. |

just go call your registry and if the car's from another state, one from that state also. it can be a huge hassle, because a lot of the times, the registry idiots give you the wrong info. they gave me the wrong info about 4 different times when i was trying to get my car from NH.
