stalls on left turns????

OK, bare with me. I bought a 2000 jeep cherokee sport, 4dr, 4wd, 4.0L with 83,000 km's 3 days ago. Today I was driving back from work and swung through a left hand turn and she very queitly and peacefully stalled out. It took about 3 times to start it to get fuel into the system and then all was good. Didn't do it again or before for that matter, I had about an 1/8th of a tank of fuel at the time and have topped it up since. I'm assuming it isn't picking up the fuel when I cornered but could it be something more than that?

Re: stalls on left turns????

how hard did you take the turn?
if it wasnt that hard it would definatly be the fuel pump.

Re: Re: stalls on left turns????

Not hard at all...I was sitting waiting for traffic to pass then away we went. It never did it again, it's like the fuel went right when I went left and it didn't pick it back up again. After it stalled it took a couple turns of the key to re-prime the fuel system and we were off to the races....I've hear that other guys have had the same problem but nobody seems to know what it is. If it was the fuel pump wouldn't it do this regardless of full or empty?

My 97 Cherokee has same symptoms

My 97 does the exact same thing, stalls on a left turn when gas is below 1/4 full. I coast to a stop, then can restart, but it is pretty dangerous. Have you found the cause of the problem? I have checked wiring, fuel path, etc. This problem has been on the Jeep boards a lot but nobody seems to have a solution!

I am fairly certain that it is not because the fuel is "sloshing" to one side due to the fact the pump is surrounded by a "cup" whose purpose it is to keep the pump submerged is such a situation.

I am researching to see if these have a roll over sensor that may be malfunctioning and causing this.

Other possiblities are loose connections, oil pressure drop...anything that the ECM sees as an issue worthy of shutting off the fuel system.

It would be really helpful information if those of you who experiance the issue could answer these questions...

FUEL TESTS
1. does fuel pressure drop just before it dies? This could mean a mechanical issue or electrical. Go on to 2.
2. do you loose voltage to the pump just before it dies? This eliminates most mechanical issues, short of oil pressure dropping to the point the ECM is sutting off the fuel. If the answer to 3 is no, then it is a wireing issue somewhere between the PDC (power distribution center) and the tank.
3. is the ASD relay opening just before it dies? If the ASD (auto shut down) relay is opening, then the ECM is shutting things down for some reason. DRB testing would be required to find out why.

Unfortunatly, these issues usually requre a DRB scan tool to be recording ECM and BCM data during the failure to really know where to start looking.
