2000 neon 2.0 idle

My girlfriend's 2000 2.0 is shaking bad when 1st putting it into gear reverse or forward. However, once I step on the gas it stops and runs fine. It also shakes sometimes when at a stop. I noticed when it does shake it is idling just under 1000 rpm. What is the normal idle speed suppose to be? Or could this be something else? Fuel filter? Air filter, spark plugs, pcv valve were all replaced about 5000 miles ago. It has about 53000 total. Any input would be great

Normal Idle is 1000 RPM's I dont really know why it would be doing that. but on that car is a IAC (Idle Air Control) Sensor. I would most likly check that first. If you have a manual like hayes then you can easly just check it with a multimedia tester. make sure voltage is right. If that is not it then the next cheap thing would be fuel filter. Check your injectors to you can check those with multimedia tester to. Hope that helps and good luck not to many people on here can help with any idle problems.

She used to have a Mitsubishi Galant. That was a money pit. I hate working on foregin cars. Wheres the fuel filter on this car? I think I'm gonna replace that 1st since I remeber the Galant doing that and the fuel filter was bad. She does tend to fill up at the same gas station. Maybe I will just buy a book since she plans on keeping it for a long time.

Filter is most likely either in the gas tank with the pump or right outside the tank on the main fuel line

Re: 2000 neon 2.0 idle

Was wondering if you ever solved the shaking problem? I have a 2000 neon and it shakes bad only in reverse. It runs well otherwise, I tend to keep my cars well maintained so this is a little frustrating for me.

2nd gen automatic Neons will idle extremely low in order to save gas, usually under 1000 rpm, somtimes 700. A car can't help but shake when it idles that low. This is not a cause for concern.

Look on the bright side, at least you're getting really good gas mileage. The Neon gets REALLY good gas mileage if you always accelerate very lightly and do a lot of coasting.

If you turn on everything that uses power, the radio, the a/c, the wipers, the defrost, all the lights, the engine will probably turn off because the alternator won't be able to provide enough power at such a low idle speed.

Re: 2000 neon 2.0 idle

The shaking that occurs is only in reverse. This is not normal and has only started in the last few weeks. This occurs weither I have accessories on or not.

I did the transmission service on it. This involved the fluid flush and replacing filter. They also adjusted the bands. Mechanic commented that there were no metal in the pan and was clean overall. He felt that the shaking may be due to a motor mount. I will post once I go to the next step. I thank you for your imput, it is very much appreciated.
