Question Knocking Noise When Turning

Can somebody please help me!!!!

I own a 2000 GTP and i have this problem: sometimes when I turn, my car makes a knocking, popping noise in the front. I have recently discovered that it also happens when I start moving after the car kicks into gear when I change to drive or reverse. I have taken it in three times to the dealership because I am under extended warranty. They have replaced the axel hubs, replaced the tie rod boots, and inspected the CV joints. Does anybody have any idea what this could be????

Thanks in advance

Re: Knocking Noise When Turning

Possible lower engine mount failing. Try putting it in gear and torque-brake the car in drive and reverse. If the engine mount is going you may hear a clunk as the engine drops under load.

Let us know.

put the car in gear, place your foot on the brake and give it some gas and try it in D and R gears around 2,000/2,500 RPM oops fixed that got push button happy

Re: Knocking Noise When Turning

Car in gear, e-brake applied and foot on brakes while applying gas. You want to put a load on the engine but keep the car from moving.

Re: Knocking Noise When Turning

ok i did that

when i put it in drive it didnt make a noise at all, but when I put it in reverse it did make a faint knoching noise but not as loud as normal, but nonetheless a noise.

So does this mean i should take it to the dealership and tell them its the lower engine mount failing?

Re: Knocking Noise When Turning

It could still be going but if really bad you'd hear a noticeable clunk. Mine was really bad and was loud in drive and reverse.

Have a friend torque-brake the car while you stand in front (don't get run over). Watch the engine to see if it drops under load. If you see a significant drop, it may be worthwhile to have the mounts checked.

Re: Knocking Noise When Turning

No. Just annoying everytime I'd accelerate from a stop. Thought it was my tranny at first. Actually when I replaced the upper and lower, my shifts improved dramatically as more engine torque was being directed to the drivetrain instead of moving the engine around.

FYI bottom mount was about a $275 job with my local mechanic (not Mr. Goodwrench). I did upper mounts myself. That's easy and cheap ($69 for poly mounts from 3800 performance).

I had the same problem with my 99 GT and it also ended up being a wheel bearing; it was easy to tell because one of the bearings had more movement in it than the other one did. That had move of a constant click with each turn of a the wheels after it had been doing it for a while.

However, before that I had a clicking when turning, put a little grease on the back of the brake pad and it went away, haven't heard it since.
