Sulphur smell

I get the dreaded sulphur smell through the air system occasionally. It doesn't happen too often, but when it does it's overpowering. I hear Toyota says it's a gas problem. I don't believe that for a minute. I've never had this problem with any other car in my life, so what is different is the car, not the gas. They issued a technical service bulletin on this in February 2003. It's number EG003-03. Does anyone know how to get a copy of that? I haven't found it on the web anywhere yet.

That sulphur smell is caused by the sulpher in the gas you're using and the catalytic converter on the car. The easiest thing to do is to try a different brand of gas to see if it clears up.

You can get the TSB from Toyota at techinfo.toyota.com but you'll have to pay $10 for a 24hr subscription. If you do that, download as much stuff as you can while there--you can get the TSBs, factory manual, electrical manual, and all sorts of other info for any Toyota. Easily worth the $10 if you do your own repairs.

Re: Sulphur smell

EG003-03 only suggests that you change fuel supplies and that unless you get a MIL with service code that no warranty service for the smell will be accepted.

The newer TSB EG011-04 May 13 2004 "Excessive Carbon Dioxide Odor" is for camry's with the 1mz-fe engine. It calls for a newer designed Catalytic Converter replacement and extends the warranty to 80,000 miles or 96 months, whichever comes first.
