I have a 98 GTP SC I purchased a Non SC motor to do a replacement. From what I have found out is that I will need to switch the Harmonic balancer, heads and plenum in order to use the sc. On the SC itself if I were to upgrade the non sc engine with the stock mods. I would need to go to the 3.5 instead of the 3.4? IS this feasible or am I out of luck not being a non sc engine? Do I need any other mods to get this to work? Will the pcm be able to figure out the diffrent compression ratio?

Are you saying you have a GTP and bought a NA 3800 to try and convert ???

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
Yes thats exactly it. I also found one other post on another site that says its not recommended b/c there is more to it than just slapping on a supercharger. The L36 (n/a version) has MUCH WEAKER pistons and connecting rods vs. the L67. In addition, the L36 has higher compression which will make it less boost-friendly. Is it true???

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
Ive heard where you can use just the short block/bottom end of the L-36.Everything on top of the the short block should be L-67 parts, head's,intake manifold, ect.

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
Thats what the guys at zzperformance said too. If you were in my shoes and at this stage would you do it? Or would wait for another 3800sc to come along. It may be weeks but it would end up about the same because I have to get another sc.

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
Well number onw is that it has 147,000 miles on it. I believe the coupler bearings are going on it because I heard a gurgle like noise coming from it. I'm going to throw the sc belt back on it and see how it does. If I can pick up the noise again. It ran great before I took the belt off it because I was worried that it might somehow break loose. I seen that zzp offers the couplers but I guess I would have to wait to take it off. Any other things it could be in there???? I also just read that worn coupler could cause this noise as well.

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
How many miles on the NA 3800 ?? Are you planning on freshing up the bottom end??
On the new engine I just received there is approx 26000 on it. On the current sc 3800 i have approx 147000 on it. |

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
when the coupler goes bad it will have a rattling sound to it at idle.Since you have the belt off the SC,you should beable to feel the play in the coupler, when go grab the pulley and turn it back a forth.

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
here is the sceneraio for the car I just want it to get a few more hp like changing the sc pullry to gain the 30 or so hp. My wife drives it and I don't want to strand her. I have no plans on racing in the near future. Maybe a couple years down the road when I have $$$$ but I just want to keep it simple so that she can have a better ride for the Highway that she drives. DO you have a yahoo IM?

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
So as far as the coupler goes if it spins freely then it most likely is not the couplers. If it is dragging then it is most likely the couplers??

Re: SC with a Non SC motor
heads, yes redo, very correct. everything on the top needs to come off the old engine for it to work, other than that, it should all be the same, i dont know about piston differences. in fact i thought you only needed to change the intake manifold as far as the engine itself. the balancer yes, since it needs two run two belts.

Nope,if you twist the pulley back a forth you will feel the play in the coupler. why not buy a replacment snout,it is rebuilt and comes with all the parts needed
