Airbag replacement?

Has anyone ever replaced the airbags in a 95+ lumina?
I am going to attempt to install my airbags tonight in my 99 lumina. I have both bags and the new computer. My concern is this: If I disconnect the battery, should i have any other concers for depolyment?
Will the dash light turn off automatically or will i need a scan tool to erase it.

Is there any other complications I may have overlooked?

Lastly, Does anyone know what screw (star bit) size I need to remove the air bag?

I've had 'em out before, keep it pointed away from your face, don't slide 'em around on anything that might cause a static discharge. I think the light is a self-test, if all component are there and accounted for, it should go out.

Re: Airbag replacement?

If the battery is disconnected, and both airbags are already deployed, there's nothing to worry about. If you have an undeployed bag, just disconnect the harness under the dash for whichever one is live before you pop the computer out. They can take some abuse, but don't try your luck on that. And don't slide around on the seat too much getting in and out. Discharge yourself on the car body or an earth ground, just for safe measure. Its just a matter of popping things off and then popping new things in. I'm not sure about the size, I just grab what fits and don't look at the numbers. The light is just a self-test, like Jeff said.

Excellent! I am going to remove them all today. I am curious; however, why are there 2 computers and where are they located? When I ordered the bags, I received two computers. A black one on a piece of sheet metal with what appears to be a relay on the corner of it. Also an "Air bag sensor."
I will follow the wires, but a little help would likely save me some time

Re: Airbag replacement?

There's two airbags, an SIR coil, and the airbag module itself. The coil goes behind the driver's airbag, the module goes under the passenger seat.

I'm pretty sure the Luminas don't have a seperate deployment sensor, its internal to the module.

OK, well I found the sensor under the seat and it is definitely not the same for 95/99 like I was told. I am going to have to get one from the junk yard I suppose (assuming they need replaced after deployment)

The new concern is this. behind the passenger airbag is another sensor/relay on a piece of sheetmetal. When i purchased my airbag set it came with this sheet of metal and relay/sensor.

I tried to swap them, out and no start. I swapped back to mine and eureka it started just fine.
Can someone tell me what that is? Do I need to replace it?

I really need to know what all needs replaced in the car after deployment in order to install th enew airbags.

Anyone that can chime in, I would really appreciate the help! I do not have a manual so it is very hard to figure out.

Re: Airbag replacement?

It's the VATS module. Keep the one you got now.

Re: Airbag replacement?

ok, I did try again with another sensore (black box whatever) and again it did not work.

What is a VATS module (What is its function)

I went to the junk yard today and found an air bag sensor for under the seat. It is identical to the one I have, yet the part # is different. The harness is a direct fit. Should this be a problem?

Also, is that the only sensor I have to replace? Is it true the cars computer needs to be checked and reset at the dealer for the airbags to not deploy again after instalation?

What i am hoping for is this:
1. I installed the replacement sensor under the passenger seat.
2. I will install replacement airbags
3. I will leave the relay and VATS sensor alone
4. Replace the ground wire to the battery.
5. Start the car and the airbag lights will go out and the car will be fine

Is this all I need to do or am i missing something?

Re: Airbag replacement?

OK, I figured out what the VATS is. Vehicle Ant-Theft System. How sure are you on this? I really do not want to blow out another winshield and set of bags.

Re: Airbag replacement?

For future reference:
When the bags deploy, you need to replace the following. I know this to be true for 95-99, possible all.

1. both airbags
2. the coil assembly in the driver steering wheel
3. sir unit under the passenger seat.

Be sure to remove the #21 fuse before instalation and removal.
