Axle nut question for wheel bearings

I have to change the wheel bearing. First time since I got the car. The brakes are always going bed but oh well.

It looks like the axle nut is four thin nuts wrapped in a piece of flat steel.

How do you get it off:

1) unwrap the flat steel and take them off individually, or
2) use a larger socket and take them all off as one unit.

Please help me

I don't know what year your Alero is, but the book I have for 1999 / 2000 models says that you just break the nut loose with a wrench. Nothing about removing any outer layers.

I changed the bearings on my 01 Alero and the nut should come off as one unit.

Make sure NOT to unwrap or cut that nut! The sheet metal holds the 2 nuts just right to make them lock on the threads! Get the right sized socket and if your not using a impact get ready for a sore arm.

I am about to replace a wheel bearing on my 2001 Alero also. I don't yet have a repair manual for this car, though. Can anyone post the specified axle nut torque, please? Also, what is the recommended torque for the 3 bolts that attach the hub assembly to the steering knuckle? Thanks.

Thanks very much for that great link. It came in very handy. The hub is replaced now and it sounds much better and the dash lights are no longer on.

Sorry guys this is an old thread. Therefore, I've closed the thread. For the link, PM the member that suggested it.

BTW - Exercise caution on the axle nut torque value. For '99-'04 Aleros to include Grand Am there are two different axle nut torque values depending on which axle nut you have. There are two designs. 1st and 2nd. The first design axle nut is a PAC type nut painted black so the torque value is 284 ft-lbs. The second design axle nut which is solid gray is torqued to 173 ft-lbs. If not adhered to you will be replacing hubs all over again in a short period of time.
