Fuel pump in tank

i have a 92 camaro needs a fuel pump its in the tank i have checked the fuse its ok replaced filter anyone know an easier way to change it. mabe cut a hole above it

ive heard stories of people cutting an access hatch in the hump under the hatch. i dont know how many people have actually done that, but its plausible to do it.

Ive seen a bunch of pictures of people cutting holes to avoid removing the tank. Alot of people disagree and I wouldnt do it myself but I dont think its that big of a deal to drop the tank. If you do cut a hole though watch the sparks and be careful of where you are cutting.

yeah i dont quite know how you would know where to cut exactly, and personally i wouldnt try it. point is, apparently its been done...

i have done it twice. just cut you a square out right in the middle of the trunk about a foot wide. then you will need to take a hack saw and cut the metal fuel lines that run up to the motor. then just remove the lock ring from around the top of the housing, then easily pull it up out of the tank. oh yeah, better syfer the tank before atempting this. then just replace the pump and filter. reinstall the pump housing and lock it back down. now you will need some ruber fuel hose and some clamps to piece your fuel lines back together. then you can fabricate a peice of sheetmetal to cover the square and seal off the cracks. i used somekind of titanium stuff from advanced auto parts, it bonds metal back together. also you will probally need to replace the fiter under the car to ensure proper fuel delivery. then just put your carpet and interior panels back in and your ready to go.

Pulling the tank isnt too bad of a job as long as its not full.Its common practice to pull the tank just to inspect it and clean any settlings or deposits inside the tank wich can kill a fuel pump.

If i may be bold enough to make a suggestion,dont get a borg warner pump.Those things are weak cheap flimsy junk and almost always fail within a few years . As a tech i dont buy them for my customers unless they insist the dealership pump is too expensive for them to fit the bill because i end up having to warrenty the stupid things when they come back as a no start.

Ive had so many of those come back to haunt me,Ive started putting footnotes at the bottom of the envoices saying the labor isnt warrentied if they use the borg pump because i can almost put money that it will be back.Even though its more expensive its best to go with one from a dealership or a oem replacement part.Look at it and if its smaller than the one coming out of the tank you can just about guess its not up to par and you will be pulling the tank right back off when it dies,especially if you dont pull the tank and rid it of crud and buildup that started growing since 1992.
Lowering a gas tank for the first time is a two man job and if you cant find any help to drop it,then cutting a hole may be your only option>but keep in mind one false move and kaboom game over.
