'96 Jetta 2.0 Turns over but won't start

I have another problem with my '96 Jetta. The last problem I had with the ignition switch was correct to those who responded, thank you. Now I was driving home one evening and it started to sputter and died. I tried to start it and it eventually started, but it would only idle. If I tried to give it gas to go it would stall out and then knock and die, if I gave it gas really gently it would raise the idle, but if I tried to give it gas any faster it would die again. It finally wouldn't do anything. So I replaced the coil and the fuel filter. I'm getting fuel, because I can smell it and it turns over fine, but it won't fire or even attempt to fire. I took a spart plug out to see if I could see a fire (I did ground it) and there was nothing. I don't even know where to begin. The check engine light is not on either. Any help...please.

I think that this is something I would have an authorized repair center look at.
