I agree with AMG - Deiselboy is the shit, especially the East Coast Mix from like 97'.
Other than that, I really like Underworld, and I saw Paul Van Dyke live, and he's pretty cool, so that's great. Basement Jaxx and Crystal Method don't count, do they? Didn't think so.

Re: Best Techno Songs
I would - but it kind of defeats the purpose of a set. Techno, along with most kinds of dance, is meant to be listened to in the order it was mixed by the DJ. Each song should flow into the next one and should be a series of breakdowns, build ups and thumping bass. A cobbled together top 10 will probably end up sounding horrible - and is the reason a lot of people dislike dance music.
My two cents.

Re: Best Techno Songs
I've dabbled a little bit with techno, mainly in the late '90s.I liked The Chemical Brothers-" Block Rockin' Beats", I think Prodigy is considered techno, I liked their songs "Firestarter", and "Breathe"(not sure if that is the correct title of that song. I also like Fat Boy Slim, I've heard his music refered to as techno.

First of all, your use of the word "techno" is a little bit misplaced as you're basically asking about electronic dance music as a whole, and techno is only a small sub-genre thereof just like house, trance, & dnb are. But lots of people do this so I won't give you a hard time about it.
I'm guessing that most of what you've heard (and pretty much every artist that's been mentioned so far) isn't techno at all, but is properly known as trance, progressive trance, prog house, as have been named before. These styles are a little bit more commonly heard since they seem to be a little bit more widely liked than a lot of techno, which can be a little bit simple and cold to the average listener. I'm not a big tech fan myself, but I do like a little Richie Hawtin every once in a while. I agree with what OZ said about random mismatched songs sounding bad when played back to back, which is why I'm such a sucker for a good dj mix cd. A few of my old favorites are Paul Van Dyke who really is great live, Sasha, Quivver, Max Graham, Timo Maas, Steve Lawler, Mark Farina... Then there are the producers, some of which have been mentioned already... The Chemical Brothers are great, but they kind of lost me around the Block Rockin Beats time. I think Exit Planet Dust (which is way old) remains thier best music, but I'm still looking forward to hearing their new album. Other old stuff I still really like is Future Sound of London, Underworld, Funki Porcini (old & new), Orbital, and others I just can't think of right now. Fatboy Slim has a huge following as a producer and a dj and I guess he's okay but I don't really listen to much of his stuff. Never did like Prodigy. I'm a big Junkie XL fan, he's just flat brilliant. Check out the 3am/3pm discs. It's really hard to recommend individual songs to people as everyone's tastes are a little bit different, and lots of times it's tough for an individual track to stand out of the bunch and really get to be as widely known as something like Darude's "Sandstorm" which is so played out it's scary... There are just so many nearly anonymous people who make the tracks that dj's play that it's hard to know what/who you like and don't like without spending a few hours in a shop listening to records. And of course all the best stuff is on on vinyl, which is how I buy 90% of my music nowadays. I've gotten to a point where I don't really know the names of the tracks or producers on most of my records, I just know what they look like or what the label is and associate that with the sound. And that's why I couldn't come up with a better list than this for favorite tracks you might like... LSG- Infectious Insignia- Revelation Breeder- The Chain Junkie XL- Bon Voyage I'll try to think of more... |

Re: Best Techno Songs
You asked for it! Not all techno, some trance and hard house too. I have tried to approximately flow with the BPM of each song so it won't sound TOO bad.
