VR4, the difference.

Well I went and checked out the 95 VR4 today. I was amazed at how nice the paint was, on my SL the paint was faded, rough, and chipped. The Red paint looked like it was brand new all over the car (except for a scratch on the side view mirror and a place on the bumper where he hit a post). I drive it around the area and it was cool to hit the throttle and feel the boost kick in. The car fealt entirely different from the SL, first thing that fealt wierd about the car was the clutch, it was much shorter and more firm (can somone explain this? Maybe its just good lol), the second thing was the stearing wheel, it fealt much stiffer, is that natural? Lol the last thing that fealt wierd was chifting into reverse , when trying to get it in reverse I stuck it in 6th and stalled lol, 3 guesses why . I was told that I should check out the y pipe and see if it had any deposit in it, nope just a fine dust like any intake, no oil or anything. I checked under the car to see if I could see any leaks or anything and was suprised to see the underbody looked immaculate also, the downpipe looked like new and so did the cat and exhaust and everything under there! He said it was detailed professionally but it still looks realy good keeping that in mind. Is there anything else I should do before I buy it? I don't know any mechanics that could check it out but I can ask over at 3SI since there are about 5 guys on there from my town. Tell me what you think!

Re: VR4, the difference.

Haha, when I got mine, I had the same damn problem...couldn't find reverse (first 6spd I'd ever driven) stalled it like 7 times in 6th gear. You'll get used to it.

As far as comparing the vr4 and an SL, I've only driven 2 NAs, and one was a beat up auto, but the vr4 definantly has a different handling and feel to it.

Check the history of the T-case, and 60k tuneup (if done already). Also, if it is in such good condition, he probably has history of maintenence (mine did) oil changes, etc...just check over them.

Have a mechanic check it out.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: VR4, the difference.

I forgot to look through the documents while I was there, he said the regular maintanance was all documented and the recall was done and all that but I just forgot to look lol. The only problem with the mechanic is that the car is not registered or insured so it would be a bit risky to take it all the way to a local mechanic, but I would like to all the same. The clutch was so tight and short that I couldent find it with my foot at first, but it fealt like it had great grip.

Re: VR4, the difference.

SWEET car bro! But umm.....if the car's not registered, I think you're gonna have to bring it up to date. Yep, you're gonna have to pay for every year that he/she missed unless if it's different in your state (I'm from CA). Just wanna give you a heads up....but if that's the case, at least you'll be able to get him to drop the price some. Hehe Good luck and keep us updated.

Re: VR4, the difference.

The clutch is much stiffer due to all wheel drive... you had frontwheel and didnt require such a strong grip... plus to tell ypu the truth it can get stiffer... its has a pressure line to help loosen the clutch... if you disconnect that line and plug it youll find the clutch way stiffer. i think the streeing was dif because either its all wheel stearing or your not used to the quick release on the vr4...

Re: VR4, the difference.

I pretty sure that the vr4s came with the spring quick release steering wheel, so when you let go it pops back into place... i might be mistakeing... plus the allwheel drive throws the wheel back in place better than front wheel.
