factory stereo

I have 2001 Cherokee and still have the factory stereo. The dealer through in the CD/Tape/AM/FM to get me to buy it the night I went to the dealer (I needed it that night anyways). With the volume on low I hear a ton of noise through the speakers, grates on me like finger nails on a chalk board. I am pretty sure that the in dash console is for a 2000 (isn't the same as the picture in the owners manual). Right now I am hoping that it is just the in dash receiver and the speakers are okay. I don't want a really loud stereo just decent sound, right now the noise at low volume is driving me nuts. Has anyone had any experience messing with the 2001 stereo/speakers?

What kind of noise is it...buzz - white noise - hum...does it change with engine rpm? How about changing with any electrical load such as headlights etc?

First thing to check with any noise is the grounds. Make sure they are all hooked up to a good chasis ground.

The noise is white noise, and it is constant. If the volume is up loud enough you don't hear it and it is independent of electrical loads. I have not checked to make sure it is grounded yet.

Okay...if you have the infinity setup (look for an amp under the driver's side rear seat) you may have a bad one. Problem is, the infinity systems are 2 Ohm and anything you look for after market is 4. If you change the amp, you will want to change the speakers also.

change that head unit out just to eliminate it since you have the spare.
