how would i piece together a turbo kit

Well, I read earlier on another thread someone saying that you could piece together a turbo kit for around $1,500. This is A LOT cheaper than the kits ive seen online. For example: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/...act/index.html
or
http://www.racetep.com/tnetfmax.html

..Well, what I am getting at is, How would i get a turbo kit together for a 98 civic dx? Would I just have to save up for like half a year to spend that $3,500 on a kit, or is there another gradual way that I can just slowly buy all the parts I need for the full kit?

Thanks for any help.

Re: how would i piece together a turbo kit

hmm, well i skimmed through those (because it'll be a while anyways, before i can get started on that)...but i have a question...how can that be 1,000...while those other turbo kits are around 3,000?....will the 1,000 dollar home made kit not perform as well as the 3,000 dollar one...or is it really just that they put their brand label on it and crank up the price?

Because they custom fit it to your car which makes it worth some more money due to being a direct bolt on kit with all the right brackets, mounts, and everything.

When you piece one together you usually have to do your own pipe work (have a shop do it) and all that fun little stuff. The $3,000 price tag has it already done for you.

It depends. If you bought the same turbo that they are selling in their kit, same intercooler, same wastegate, same BOV, etc... and had your piping bent as smooth as they do then you would have the same performance....

Having recieved a lot of advice from the names on here (and quite a bit of ball busting from kicker...) I probably don't have to say this buuutt....

let's not forget all that wonderful boost and increased fuel flow turns into increased exhaust...so for all those considering such a project (my cheap-do-it-myself behind included) don't forget about upgrading the exhaust (cat, piping, muffler) and upgrading the fuel system (rail, pump, lines, etc) all of which will make the thing work better....and yep, internals for increased boost...

essentially, noobs like myself lookin for some inexpensive turbo lovin' should be aware that as easy as this project may seem to do yourself, know that everything in a car is a chain reaction....boost ups the horsepower, which ups the engine use, which increases fuel consumption, which increases exhaust, while increasing speed, which requires better handling, which will need better braking.....la la la

but hell...if you have the means, and the stones, sounds like a plan.
I just might try it....

...it says that it is for an integra...and it also says that it is for a b series engine.....i have a 98 honda civic dx...so what things would i have to do differently?

a manifold that fits, a dumptube that fits, intercooling piping that fits, a downpipe that fits.............basically piping issues. all piping can be custom fabbed.

you can piece together a piece of crap turbo system composed of a crappy manifold, turbo, intercooler, fmu, blah blah blah for $1500 that works......................or................you can fab yourself a turbo with quality parts.

concerning prefab kits, they are awesome. however for 3k they can do better. for 3k you can do better.

the $1500 turbo system = gets you up and running with a turbo. spend more for a better turbo, manifold, intercooler, management system, boost controller, catch can, blah, blah, blah = you will be more happy and encounter less problems along the way.

I have a DX also, and while I was masterminding how to put together my own turbo, the first thing that came to mind was the fuel system...I just don't think that the fuel system on a DX as is would be enough to produce the flow for a turbo fmu be damned.

I would think, if we are really saving money, a mini me swap, or at least a y8 head and ECU then add the turbo with some increased fuel lines, pumps, etc etc...would be the best route for a faster motor and a turbo for concievably under $2000.

imo

Re: how would i piece together a turbo kit

i figured injectors and a controlling unit would always be better than an fmu.

unless your pushing some major power, the stock rail, fpr, and lines will be fine.
