2000 5.9 recently started taking longer to start
I have 2000 5.9 w/ about 47000 miles on it.
Recently, I've noticed it taking longer to start. It's always started right up, but now I have to turn it over for 4, maybe 5 seconds. If I crank it, for a few seconds, turn it off (before it starts) and turn it over again, it will typically start quick like it use to originally do. Could a problem like this be attributed to bad fuel? I live up in North Dakota, and we have been having cold snap to warm snap temps that last couple weeks, so could moisture or something like that cause it. Or, is it likely an issue with fuel delivery? From searching the forums, I discovered the Ram trucks don't have fuel filters, so I guess that's out. Thanks in advance for any ideas/advice? btw, I have an extended bumber to bumper warranty on it, so will probably take it in. I just like to have an idea what the problem could be and learn a little bit since I'm not exactly "skilled" with engines ![]() -Gary |

Re: 2000 5.9 recently started taking longer to start
From what you described as cranking then stop cranking then immedietly recrank and starts right up is usually caused by fuel pump loosing head pressure and could be just your filter regulator at fuel pump assy or if warranty covers complete fuel pump assy that will deffinetly repair the issue and you also benefit a new pump and level assy if they replace assy from the dealer

In response to Rusty's reply, I've got an autostart too. It does seem to start a little quicker through the autostart.
I still haven't brought mine in yet, but will be doing so in the next couple of weeks. It's due for a 48000 mile check-up. Later, Gary |

Re: 2000 5.9 recently started taking longer to start
try this, turn the key on for a few seconds, but don't crank it over. ( you should be able to hear the fuel pump running) after a few seconds, turn the key to the start position and see if it starts right up, or still takes a wile. if it dose start right up, then I'd guess that you're loosing fuel preasure someplace wile the engine is shut off. could be a sticking injector, dirty filter, or the pump could be on it's way out.

My 96 5.9 V8 has always taken a long time to start every since i purchased it almost a year ago. If i turn the key to the spot right before cranking the engine and turn it off and repeat this 3 times, the engine will start perfectly (basically priming the pump). I have heard that this could be due to air getting into the system, or loss of pressure. I am not sure where to attack this problem though. Let me know if you figure anythign out

My truck just developed this problem. Did anyone find a way to fix it.
