Question Coolant poring from head- Is the head gasket shot?

My girlfriend's '89 volvo wagon started over heating one day, completly out of the blue. I take a look under the hood and realize that the coolant resevoir is totally dry. I fill it up and instantly see that all the coolant I put in was just poring from the engin where the head meets with the block.
Is this a blown head gasket or what?? The car has no other signs of having a blown head gasket what so ever...
Any thoughts or info would be really helpful right now.
Thanks.

Re: Coolant poring from head- Is the head gasket shot?

you are probably correct. as long as she doesnt have aluminum heads you will be good. just grab ya another gasket and some high tempature gasket sealer and replace it (torqueing the head bolts corectly). this should stop the leak. if it doesnt. i have no idea.
if she does have aluminum heads you will have to either buy new heads or have them machiened as they are most likely warped.

Re: Coolant poring from head- Is the head gasket shot?

The quickest way to determine if the head gasket is shot is to check the oil and see what color it is. If the oil is a milky white-brown color, then the head gasket is shot.

If it does prove to be the head gasket, get the head checked if it is flat, or if it warped when it overheated. It may need to be decked at a machine shop.

It is very rare for the coolant side of the gasket to blow. Furthermore it will not blow there without a good reason. As mentioned above, the head may be warped or cracked and must be checked by a machine shop when its removed, whether the head is iron or aluminum.

Re: Coolant poring from head- Is the head gasket shot?

My previous car was a Mitsubishi Galant 1800 GLSI. Coolant was leaking from between the gasket, but the oil didn't have a milky white-brown color. I fiksed the problem by covering the outside of the engine where the leak was located with a pasta that becomes as hard as steel. The leak was gone and I sold the car. The buyer didn't notice it and exported the car to Russia. Maybe the pasta is still on it and the car is still running without problems.
