Please Explain Port and Polish...

Im pretty newbified as to what this is and the process involved.

I have a 97 Lude and some $$ to spend and I was thinking about going with some form of FAI.....but I really would like to know what the Port and Polish deal is.

So what are the downsides and upsides to this process?

port and polish means to open up the ports in the head to match the diameter of the intake and exhaust manifolds. polishing is merely to polish those channels, remove casting marks to inprove airflow efficiency.

the benefit is faster/higher intake and exhaust flow resulting in more power due to efficiency, at times reaching as high as 10-15 hp or more.

the only downside is cost, since the best headjobs are the most expensive.
