dash space behind headunit?
just curious if anyone has taken the headunit section of the dash off and has a good idea of what kind of space is back there (if any). im curious because im in the process of working on a carpc and would love to mount the components (micro-atx motherboard, hard drive, a few small usb devices, possibly a pci card or 2, and an average size power supply, dvd drive, etc..) back there, but i have no idea what kind fo room is back there. as aa helper, plans are to remove the headunit, heat/ac controls, and possibly the lower section of controls like rear wiper, defroster, etc.. for room. in that place a screen will be molded in as well as the dvd drive.
for those who got lost in my mindless gabbig my main question is just how much space is behind the dash.

Re: dash space behind headunit?
You didn't mention which model year you have and it may make a difference... but I once removed my '99's instrument cluster (to put a wad of RTV in the door chime sounder to lessen the volume). In my case, the cluster was nested in a plastic cube that was molded integral to the dash assembly. Not much room there.

Re: dash space behind headunit?
sorry its taken so long to reply. i seem to have stopped getting reply notification emails from here lately (might just be my email is set on my old hotmail address. ill have to check), but its a '96 and im mainly worried about the area behind where the headunit is located.
and while im at it, where exactly is that chime located? does the cluster need to be removed to get access to it or can it be accessed from say under the dash? |

Re: dash space behind headunit?
In my '99's case, the chime is a small sounder soldered to the back of the instrument cluster printer circuit board. No access without removing cluster.

Re: dash space behind headunit?
By headunit I'm going to assume you mean RADIO. In my '01 there is plenty of room back there. It's deep enough for my pioneer cd player to fit nicely.
