mine was because the bypass connector from the water pump to the intake manifold broke. The factory piece is made of plastic and I smelled antifreeze for a month before finding it - apparently it had a crack in it allowing antifreeze to seep out and burn off for quite sometime. After moving the alternator out of the way and removing the hose I had to heat a chisel and melt it into the broken piece then let it cool and backed it out by turning it counterclockwise. The guy at NAPA was very familiar with the replacement part- new peice with hose was about $16. This may not be your problem but it turned out to be mine - not sure how many years they used the plastic "connector."

I went one step better and instead of replacing with the same plastic piece, I went to the local hardware store. I found a brass pipe bushing or something with the same threads, then a brass hose barb that threaded into the bushing. A little teflon tape on the threads and it will never break off again.
