Help - Ignition lock jam

When I tried to start my 02 Intrepid ES this morning, the key wouldn't turn. The car is in Park and the steering lock is not engaged, but try as I can, the key won't turn.

How do I disengage the ignition lock?

Are the front wheels turned? Sometimes when they are turned and the engine is shut off the steering system will put a lot of pressure on the steering wheel, if you turn the wheel slightly to the right or left depending on the direction it's against the wheel lock you should be able to unlock the ignition.

I am able to turn the steering wheel freely - or, at least I was at first before I did it too much and the steering lock engaged. But, to answer your question, the turning of the steering wheel did not disengage the ignition lock - and neither did pushing the brake pedal, or rattling the gearshift lever. I'm really at wit's end!

you haven't by any chance jammed your key or bent it in any way did you? When you put your key in the ignition, does it go in smooth or is there some resistance? A bent key will give you the same problems you're having.

I had a brainwave and called the AAA. A patrolman came out, took a screwdriver and hit the end of the key rapidly as he tried to turn it in the ignition. Bingo!!
