Engine Hard Light / Overheat / reduced engine power
Supposed to have a good weekend bu that is not happening. Let the car run for a while and I got a engine hard light, overheat and the LED messaged "reduced engine power". I turned the car off and it cooled within 5 minutes. Started the car back up and the temp was normal however I still have the hard light. I also noticed when I revved it to 3000 rpm I had a thumping going on from the rear of the car. The car has 76K miles. Any ideas before I take it to the dealership and fork out the serious cash??

Re: Engine Hard Light / Overheat / reduced engine power
when in park or neutral there is a 3k rpm limit. Have the local autozone read your pcm with their obdII scan tool.

My '01 LS has had this problem for about 6 months, and it never happens at a good time, if there even is such a thing. I've had it to the dealer who did an entire electronics scan and found nothing. Well, this morning it happened to my wife just as she was passing the dealer ironically enough. She 'limped' in and they took a look. Turns out it is the electric cooling fan. Looking back, I recall the fan seemed to be on all the time right before the problem occurred. They are swapping it out now. I'll let you know if the problem reoccurs. Hope this helps.

Re: Engine Hard Light / Overheat / reduced engine power
The electric cooling fan is pretty loud. I know my car is not overheating even though its saying it is. I need to get my dealor to check it out. Its been happening to me quite often lately but turning the car off and then back on fixes it so i haven't been too worried about it. I know i should take it in but i have been procrastinating.
