Oil Filters

Can't afford K&N filters. Wondered who has the next best filters for the best price? At the local auto stores or on the internet. Wix, Baldwin, etc.

This could be a touchy subject.Use Wix,Purulator,etc.Just don't use FRAM!

Personally, I use NAPA GOLD. The are made by WIX (a company known for high quality. It has an excellent silicone Anti-drainback valve, this means no dry starts (all the lifter noise and valve rattling you hear at start-up with other filters).

Stay away from FRAM, they are junk. The internal contruction is made of cardboard and the anti-drainback valve does nothing, that's why Fram filters are notorious for noisy start-ups, all the noise is due to the components on the top of the engine starting up dry, which leads to accellerated wear and shortens the life of the engine.

Forgot to mention.... other good ones are Purolator PureOne, AC Delco, and Wix. Stay away from Penzoil and Quaker State because they are made by FRAM too.

Yip, K&N is a little overrated.

Wix, Napa Gold, Ac Delco Duraguard, Purolator will all serve you well.

I tried one of those expensive double filtration filters with friction reducing compound in it. I forget the brand name. Maybe it had defective bypass. But I could not get it on tight enough to stop it from spraying past it's rubber o ring which was not damaged. Switching to regular filter was fine.

Fram Double Guard?


Never use one of those filters with the teflon compound inside. Teflon is not for engines, even though a lot of companies try to convince you otherwise. The makers of teflon clearly state that it should not be used in automotive applications.

Bingo !! ;-) That rang a bell. That's the name. Now i can see it in memory too from yrs ago. it was i think black and gold and now that you mention it yes, i think it was teflon. thanks. i've stayed away from additives like that since then.

Smart man, there are good additives for oil, but most oils have them already in it now.

Teflon was NEVER meant for inside the engine and actually will turn into a corrosive acid when exposed to combustion by products.

I have been using AC delco filters for years now with no problems and they are easy to get at advance auto. Everything about Fram so far is right on the money, I love seeing people educated about Fram and hope one day the plethora of orange boxes at the parts stores will go away. Any of the recommended filters so far will do the trick for you. Enjoy the added protection.
