Angry No reverse on manual transmission

I have a 1989 f150 with a 4 speed manual tranny.The problem is that when I try to put it in reverse it will not stay there.I have to hold the gear shift back for me to have reverse.please help ....the gear shift is in the floor.

Sounds like a detent ball has come loose.

its a ball that has a spring under it and when you shift into gear the ball is pushed into a detent to help hold the shift fork
