stall at stop
92 3.1 with 205000 on her.
Any ideas? A few weeks ago I had the crankshaft sensor replaced. Car would turn over but not fire. Sometimes if I waited 25 mn, it would start up with a overpowering gas smell. It seems that the problem would intensify after I filled with gas. So at fills I am now adding heet. (minnesota!!) The fuel pump would work because you could hear it. Now today after I filled up with gas again, I can start car, but when I approach a stop she dies. If I can get it into neutral, I can idle, or come to astop and she will idle, but when I step on the gas it kills. So far it starts up ok after it dies, but I have to race engine and shift quickly. What can I do oo? I believe I had this problem before, but for the life of me I cant remember what the problem was. Thanks all! |

Re: stall at stop
you have a weak fuel pressure regulator. The diaphram probably has a small pinhole or tear in it, and is allowing fuel pressure to bleed off. It's a relatively easy part to change and only costs about $40 or so. Common problem on 88-93 2.8/3.1 v-6's

I'll check it out. It seems if I keep speed under 25 miles per hour I dont have problem over 25 she dies at stop.
Ill look in my chiltons for how to replace and let ya know.. |

Re: stall at stop
found out it was a dirty throttle plate - too much oil even though the dipstick didnt show too much
Got the oil changed added a little tranny fluid cleaned the trottle plate - whala - runs great. |

Re: stall at stop
still check out the fuel pressure regulator. take the vacuum line off of it and if any gas in it, it is bad.
check the idle air controller. that could be sticky. and one last thing is could be torque converter lockout switch, depending on the transmission. i feel your pain. i live in minnesota as well. |

Re: stall at stop
i believe you only have to do that for the fuel regulator. the idle air controller is right along the air intake. and the torque converter lockout is down on the top of the transmission.

Re: stall at stop
Crap. Now it back to not starting at all now like it had been doing when all the problems started. I had the crankshaft sensor replaced and that seemed to cure the crank no spark problem.
I'll try to start it agin in a bit and it will be like it is flooded - massive gas smell. Fuel pump works ok. |

Re: stall at stop
let it sit. or hold the pedal to the floor and let her crank, that tells the system to purge and it will start.

Re: stall at stop
Hopefully resolution to the problem :
Sensor wire connection wire full of oil and antifreeze Different mechanic found that evidently when crankshaft sensor was replaced, the connection waterproof shield was stripped and filled with silcone. This caused a short - no spark condition when engine is hot - cold it seemed to be fine. The wire was replaced with waterproof shield, sensor area cleaned out. Car tested, and so far so good. I will know in a week or so if this resolved the issue. Thanks again for all the great input. The fuel pressure regulator tested out a-ok (it was dry) by the way... |

Re: stall at stop
ok. Got her back,
but now she runs REALLY HOT (to the red zone.-but cools down when I'm driving. I'll check coolant level again in the am, but the coolant was just filled. I dont see a puddle where. |
