Guys wanting to buy an air intake setup...check this out first

Guys, in our ever ending quest to save some cash and get the best bang for the buck, I'm going to show you guys the place where I just ordered all of my new intake setup from. If some of you guys are wanting to do an aftermarket intake, but are alittle strapped for cash, you can build one, as good if not better, than the K&N,etc. Here's the website.

http://shop.airflowonline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv

Ok, I'm going to post up a few of the things I just ordered. First off, I currently have the Airaid intake setup with Modular intake tube. I just don't really care for the MIT, because it just seems restrictive in places. I want to go with a full 4" tube from throttlebody to the filter.
For measurement purposes, I'll post up a few.
Throttlebody is 4"
Mass airflow sensor, throttlebody side is 3.5"
Mass airflow sensor, air filter side is 4"

Here's a few pics of what all I ordered. I really hope some of you guys will fab yourselves up some intakes. You'll love the results and take more pride in it because you built it yourselves. Oh, yeah, and total parts including a universal k&n cone filter will cost you about $100. Can't beat that.

Here's a pic of the 4" intake tubing I ordered. I ordered 3 ft of it to have some to play with.

Here's a pic of the 90 degree bent rubber connector I bought to come out from the throttle body and connect to the intake tubing

Here's a picture of the hump hose I ordered to connect the 4" intake tubing to the Mass airflow sensor.

I ordered about 5 of these clamps to have handy

Ok, I already have the Airaid kit, which includes the airaid air filter and the heat shield. You can go to Jegs or Summitracing and pick up a 4" universal cone filter.
For the heat shield, you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get some 1/16" sheet aluminum.
I'll post up some pics when everything arrives and I get everything together. A buddy of mine just ordered from these guys and has everything on his truck. It looks better than my setup, and I paid so much more for everything.

Or if you want to go even cheaper, use pvc. My friend did it when he had his 4 cylinder ranger. It worked great according to him.

Re: Guys wanting to buy an air intake setup...check this out first

I know a guy that did something very similar to this with making his own intake. However he went another step farther and some how worked in 2 small electric fans inside the intake tubing, one before and one after the filter. He claims its 10 times better than any after market intake but i think its a kinda dumb idea cuz the fans run at all times the other electrical accesories do. so who knows...just a very interesting idea.

that would be just like those "electric susperchargers" that suckers in the import scene buy for their cars. from what i'e been told they block more air than they force through b/c the motors just aren't power enough

I was thinking of doing this also. I have a 2003 2500 4x4 6.0. Do you know if it will still work if you have stock fan shroud? There is only 5" from the TBI to the edge of the shroud. Also, I thought that of using Silicone intercooler/intake 90s and reducers. They come in different colors and are rated for higher temp. than regular rubber fittings, but are a little more expensive.

I was going to go with a 90 degree bend that will connect 2- 4" pipes. I've been told the throttle body is 4".

i have a 99 4800 vortec, i did some measurements of my own. the throttle body is just under 4" O.D., the engine side of the MAF is just under 3.75" O.D., and the other side of the MAF is just under 4" O.D. You guys should keep in mind that a rubber elbow is a great idea but you only have about 4.5" of clearance between the throttle body and the fan shroud, so most elbows you buy wont fit. You will have to bend it to a severe degree to make sure it doesnt hit the fan, and in doing this you will probably restrict the airflow in a large manner. I made a temporary intake using some 4" aluminum flexible air ducting from menards, two hose clamps, and some rubber splicing tape to go between the duct and whatever im clamping it to. It works pretty spiffy and a good power gain, but this is only temporary cause that stuff isnt exactly tough-as-nails... hope this helps

I think that the TBI and MAF are all the same size on 4.8, 5.3, & 6.0. My TBI is also 4" and the MAF on the intake side is 3.75", so you would need 4" ID. Elbow, 4" to 3.50 hump hose/reducer. I have found some intercooler/turbo hose that looks like it may work, but I can not find specific dimensions on them. May have to find/make mandrel bent elbow that will fit between the TBI and shroud, then connect the elbow and intake tube with a coupler and then have hump hose or reducer into MAF. If someone finds something that will fit with a stock fan setup please let me know.

would using pvc keep air flow a little cooler than aluminum? or would it even make any difference?

PVC may insulate the air more than a metal intake tube. The only problem is there is only 5" between the TBI and the edge of the fan shroud, and I have not been able to locate a short enough 90 that would fit. Maybe you will have more luck than I. Now if you have replaced the stock clutch fan with an electric run fan then you should have plenty of room for a PVC fitting. If anyone has found a PVC fitting short enough to fit in front of a stock fan shroud, please post where. Thanks.
