upgrading my altenator.....

ok so i recently installed a sound system in my car. my lights are dimmin like crazy everytime the base hits. so i need to upgrade my altenator. but i realy dont feel like paying 120+ for a HO alt. my cavi is a 92' 2.2 4 cly. if i go to the junk yard an find a V6 altenator, would that work in my car? would i have to upgrade anything else for it to work right? what years would be compatable? about how much more amps would i get? right now i believe the stock output is just under 70amps. my sub amplifier will pull 80, hence the dimming lights. so id need around 90+ to fix my problem.... any thoughts??

Re: upgrading my altenator.....

If you had your system set up right you wouldn't have this problem. Your 6x9 or w/e your rears are for that year aren't meant for thumpin and bumpin. They are meant for sound quality and a little bass in them but not to the point of it causing your lights on your deck to fade. I am more of a SQ guy than SPL and my deck puts out 52w X 4 and my deck dosn't even dim with i have it on 53 out of 62 volume level. Your alt really isn't your problem, you need a better battery if you want to have a better system. Try an optima red or yellow top and that should help you out some for what you have right now.

ok my deck has nothing to do with it, its my 2000 watt amp thats pushing my dual 2200watt AW1206T subs.... it draws 80 amps, my 6x9s up front arnt even drawing anything close to anything that would make my lights dim. upgrading my battery isnt gonna help the dimming. i need a higher output alt. SO LIKE MY ORIGINAL QUESTION, if i go get an altenator from a V6 will it crank out more amps? or do u just not know anything about electronics of a vehicle?

Re: upgrading my altenator.....

I think you'd be surprised on how a new higher rated battery would help you out. People with sytems arn't running off the stock AC delco batteries. If you found an new alternator from a V6 it would have to have the same bolt pattern to mount on yours, and the rating on that alternator. If its putting too much of a charge back into the battery, it could lead to battery failure.

Re: upgrading my altenator.....

Your alternator is probably just old. Switch for an OE unit! You should be fine you only have one amp! But you could dial in less gain and it should be fine. You don't want to kill your subs. You are running close to the RMS for you speakers so dial in less gain they'll last a lot longer and the draw will be lessend!

ya its the original stock alt that came wit the car. an yes its just one amp but its a big one. each sub can handle twice what im pushin into em, i did it that way so eventualy i can get another amp an double my system power... but i need to upgrade my altenator before i even think about getting another one. so let me clarify my question one more time.

Will a stock Altenator from a V6 Cavi push out more amps than the one thats on my 4cl? by how much? Will i have to upgrade anything else to avoid overcharging my batt? ive got a yellow top Optima...

Are you going by the RMS rating or what it says on the box. The box always says the max rating and the subs can only take this in short bursts and RMS is usually half of this amount of less. The subs That are AudiBahn Units are 1100w MAX and only 550W RMS you wont want to go over the RMS value or they will blow! If you have a 2000w amp then you do the math!

You only need one amp!

OK THIS IS NOT A CAR AUDIO FORUM...... im asking about the altenator!!
FYI; AW1206 is 2200watts peak, 1100RMS each. ive got two of them in a custom built 5 Cu.Ft encloser ported to 36hz. Pushing them i have a Vibe 2000watt peak amp. which is running on 2x 600watts RMS @ 2ohm mono. ive got my math str8. PLEASE NO MORE POSTS ABOUT MY SYSTEM my math is fine, my amp will draw 80amps. my altenator i believe can only push 60-70 (probably closer to 60 cuz its old) so combine what my amp is pulling along with my lights, heater, wipers, ect. and im gonna need about 100 amps at idle to nullify my dimming problem. FYI everything dimms on the base hits, headlights, stereo, heater blower fades, everything.... ive already got a yellow top optima batt.

AGAIN: will a stock altenator from a V6 cavi give me more cranking amps at idle then the one i currently have (stock 4cl Cavi)

Cranking AMPs is a Battery term and also This is in the main cav forum and many people have posted stuff about Audio. There isn't an Audio cav forum but people with Cavs ask on here. I'm trying to help you so don't go off on one at me! All I'm telling you is your Alt is screwed and needs replacing and that you don't need another amp as I didn't want to hear that you had blown your subs!!! But if you don't want me to tell you that tha's fine find out the hard WAY!!!!!!!!!!!! You'r Alt is screwqed just replace it with an OE unit for your car!!! and turn down the gainn on you amp so the subs don't start smoking. You can chose to ignore this or you can go ahead and fuck everything up your call but if you don't want HELP don't ask for it!

Re: upgrading my altenator.....

A stock v6 alt is rated at 100 amps vs the 80 amps for the 4 cyl amp.

The mounts are different but the bodies are similar enough that a swap of the front frames, behind the pully where the mounts are, might work.

The extra 20 amps might help a bit but a second battery will allow more draw down while the amps are needing it without dropping the volts to the lights. The v6 alt will keep the batteries charged up better but it will still be better to use an ac charger when the car is parked to keep the batteries at peak. Use a volt meter to quick check battery charge 30 minutes after the key is turned off to allow for all the computers to shut themselves down. 12.6 to 12.7v is full charge. 12.4 is 50% charge. Isolate the batteries to charge them.

Re: upgrading my altenator.....

You could also try the fit of the rotor and stator of the100amp in the 80 amp. Not sure about the voltage regulator cross over.

Parts listings at the dealer might tell you if there are any higher rated components that will fit your 4 cyl housing too.

In the old series 10 delco alt's all you had to do is change up the stator to increase the amp rating.
