95 oldsmobile cutlass supreme won't shift out of 1st gear

Hey everbody,
I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on my problem. I have a 95 oldsmobile cutlass supreme (automatic), and the problem is that it won't shift out of first gear. When I give it gas, the RPM's increase, but it won't shift, preventing me from going over ~20 mph. Somehow tied to this is the fact the speedometer doesn't work at all either. A couple of times, while I was driving (slowly), all of a sudden everything worked again, with the car shifting and the speedometer working fine. But most of the time neither work. Does anyone have any idea what the cause of this might be, or how much it might cost to repair?

Thanks for your help

long shot, but it might be your torque converter switch. It is the same switch as the brake light switch but it works the opposite way. Maybe it came unplugged? Id check it out its right above the brake pedal.

But that sounds like your tranny man, good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sconic.
I took it to the shop and it turned out to be the speed sensor on the transmission. It cost about 200 to fix, but not nearly as much as it would have if it were the transmission itself that was bad
