Exclamation 99 Rodeo 2WD V6 Check Trans light flashing

For unknown reasons, the "Check Trans" light came on the other day. It was flashing for about three days and then it went back off.

Car was driving fine, transmission did not go into "backup mode" or anything.

Any ideas on what could cause that? Is there anything I should have done (like a flush/fill trans fluid) so that down the line I don't need a new transmission?

Thanks!

I would at least check the fluid level

Check your battery ground points (clean them up too.)

And if that doesn't work, maybe unplug the range position selector and clean up the connections and re-di-electric grease them.

After that, a flush (depending if, and when your last flush was, and the amount of miles you have on your OEM tranny filter) would be in order.

I'm not sure if you can get to the tranny codes from OBII port?

Sure can. The P0700 (700 series) codes are associated with the AT. I too would start with the easy stuff, check ATF level, check range sensor, maybe do an ATF and filter change. I've found that if you are already having issues related to warn out, dirty, burnt ATF, or even running long term on low ATF level, new ATF may not help you. The damage is already done.

You need to get it checked out.One think I always check also is the alternator. There was a recall on 96 and 97,s for overcharging. And it would throw a trans code( I can,t recall what code).Like rodeo02 said also I have done a lot of range position switches on these also.Get it looked at soon.Carl

Yup....Low ATF levels and/or burnt ATF will very quickly cause the transmission to overheat and damage it. Check the fluid first, then move on to other things. I learned this lesson the hard way. Once on a road trip one of the transmission cooler lines sprang a leak where the rubber hoses connect to the radiator and I lost a good bit of fluid after I parked it a few times on stops. It wasn't long after that my check trans. light came on and then I noticed the leak.
