Need to get 94 s10 blazer 4x4 home stuck in 4low

Hi guys, great site. Yesterday I had a problem with the transfer case not disengaging out of 4low. The shift button was flashing like crazy and I could hear a lot of clicking under the glove compartment. Also had a burnt electronic smell in vehicle. The only thing that would stop the clicking was to disconnect the battery. My question is what is the best way to troubleshoot this without buying all kinds of parts to test with, and is there a way that I can somehow manually disengage out of 4low to get this thing home and into the garage to work on it. I looked through the site about this but could not find anything that really shed some light this problem. Any input would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks.

The burnt smell in the vehicle worries me. It sounds like the transfer case control module might have shorted. It's in the center of the dash.

As for manually shifting the transfer case, you would have to remove the encoder motor off the transfer case and shift it with a 5/8" wrench. to get the encoder off, you will have to remove the front driveshaft.

I was thinking the same thing to. It could here the clicking noise for about 3or 4 minutes before it smelled burnt. Is it possible that that something else was jammed up causing this to overheat.

I would check the switch bank also.

Thanks for the responses. BlazerLT, when you say switch bank do you mean the dash switch. If so do I check it with an ohm meter. Thanks

Yea, the dash push buttons.

Check them with an ohm meter and CLOSELY inspect them for burn marks.

Thanks alot I'll check this out tomorrow. Is there a troubleshooting chart for this electronic system. I hate to change parts haphazardly, it usually gets unneccessarily expensive to do this unless you work at a dealership. And again thanks for the input.
