Re: front plate

This is a "State" thing. In general, if your state sends you two plates, a rear and a front plate, you are required to have them on the car.

Re: front plate

in california, you must have your front plate somewhere on your front bumper. If you don't its a fix-it ticket.

Yes, and they might give you a 2nd ticket for obstructed view if the cop isn't in a good mood.

On the other hand, I'm in NY, and we are required to have 2 plates on...I've had this car for a year and a half and refuse to put the front plate on, and I've never had a cop look twice (and my car does get plenty of attention). I'd rather pay a $30 fix-it-ticket than have my front plate on. So if you don't want it on, don't put it on...and see how your local cops are.

Re: front plate

there's always a place on the car to put it, such as in a grille opening, or hung from the bottom of a bumper overhang.

We need both plates up here as well. As far as the law goes (and what attorney’s say), it is up to the cops individual discretion to decide what is acceptable or not. I got my first ticket in 3+ years last summer driving with my plate tucked in the front of the dash on the drivers side. It was end of the month and the dude saw an easy ticket to give – didn’t want to hear any of my excuses. Besides that time I’ve never had problems with the plate.

Re: front plate

Massachusetts also has some rear plates only but that was years ago and I'm stuck with the new ones, I am thinking about painting mine to look like the old ones or just striping the red letters off.

Has anyone seen car commercials where the plate is painted over the same color as the car? That would be funny, they wouldnet have any way to tell if I had the single plate or not lol. I bet its illegal though.

Well, its against the law to deface a licence plate, and its also the responsibility of the vehicle operator to ensure the plates are well maintained and visible (ie. no snow/dirt blocking the plate, must be replaced if rusty, etc...). So ya that wouldn't hold up.

Re: front plate

I don't think they're even notice if the lettering was a different color lol. I'll have to find out.

Again, its all up to the particular cops discretion whether to charge you or not. Here in Ontario the licence plate slogan or message at the bottom reads "YOURS TO DISCOVER". A few years back my buddy had a 5.0L LX and one day he took some white out (literally, the pen & paper stuff) and covered up the Y and VER so his plate read "OURS TO DISCO"... You could barely notice it unless you were stuck behind him in traffic for a few hours. Well, he got at least 1 ticket where the cop was a totaly ass - my friend even started scraping the shit off on the spot but the cop was like see you in court (they get overtime right, don't forget that).

So, depends on the cop and also what kind of attitude you put out on the road - I'm actually going to get into that in another thread, I'll post a link for anyone who wants to check out. Good debate topic.
