UHH DUHHHH 350...it's like everything the 305 is...but bigger and more powerful...and from what i've noticed the 350 lasts longer too.

Not neccessarily...350s are notorious for spinning bearings...not such a big problem on the 305s. However, I would rather build a 350 because so long as it doesnt spin any bearings, its going to slaughter the 305 for the same money.

Re: 305 or 350

Of course it seems like it has balls...Its a V8. But as a powerplant, the 305 (stock) has always be inferior to the 350.

Re: 305 or 350

parts are cheaper for the 350 not to mention the availability of them.

Re: 305 or 350

the two engines are the exact same thing only thing different was when it went to get bored and honed they needed one or the other so they just bored it to what they needed more at the time. i would prefer to have the 305 because it was not bored out as much and leaves plenty of (meat) to bore, remove taper and out-of-round than a 350. as long as it has never been bored after market it should be a great base block. the parts are the same price same strength and everything yes it will cost about 50.00 more to bore out to say a 350 than boring a 350 but when you are saying 350 that really means nothing because the chevy small blocks are the same. get a 305 get it bored about .040 over put a .020 longer stroke in it and then deck the block.020 and shave the heads about.020 and that will kick the *&^# out of any 350 and no they don't have a problem spinning bearings if they do it is because they were not taken care of or not machined properly.

Re: 305 or 350

yes and no. a 350 is a great block but it is hard to find one that has not been bored on already and if you do it will more than likely have alot of taper and out of round in the cylinders and may not cleanup that good.it will take an extra 50.00 to punch a 305 to a 350 and then it will be good and straight to start on. i am not saying that you can't find a good 350 but it is easier to find a 305 because everyone wants a 350. when you find a block don't beleive what they tell you go look up its casting numbers

Re: 305 or 350

305's have a thinner block casting and boring them out to a 4 inch bore isnt a good idea. And 305 heads are thin castings too. They suck.

Re: 305 or 350

that is a common misconception of their walls being thinner, they are not and taking it out to 4 inch bore is only .300 inch more because their bore stock is 3.736 but they use the same 3.484 inch stroke that the 350 uses. there were different castings and depending on where it was cast could mean it has thinner walls but we are talking about around 0.0004 of an inch at that is nothing. yes the heads had different water jackets than the 350 and are prone to warpage but if they are not warped that is a plus for building a high horsepower 350 because they flow more water but once it overheats you can kiss those good-bye.take your factory block get it bored and get some 350 heads. It all depends on how much you are looking at spending on your engine. as far as the half nickel half iron block it sounds like a joke. i have been working in machine shops, dealerships and custom shops for the last 16 years and the only blocks they make are of cast iron and aluminum and i have even seen forged steel and aluminum but never seen or heard of an alloy block like that.you have an engine and i would work with that. it alldepends on money

so how much do u think a local canadian machine shop will charge me for getting my 305 block cleaned and machined and "get it bored about .040 over put a .020 longer stroke in it and then deck the block.020 and shave the heads about.020" like u said and plus then ill need new pistons and all that.....how much do u estimate thatll cost me?? cuz i am only a 16 year old but if i need the money i can pull it out from sumwhere

i jus wanna unique and fast car, everybody has 350'z...

Re: 305 or 350

well a general estimate would be around 2000-2500 for everythingif the machine shop buys the parts but you can go to summitracing.com and buy a rebuild kit for a 350 and it will have what you need here is the part number of the one i prefer sum-csum355kit which is actually for 355 c.i.and the other is ses-348484006550 which gives you 357 c.i. when assembled. the 357 kit is 820.00 and the 355 kit is 890.00. ussually a machine shop will charge you around 700.00 to machine and assemble an engine you have the parts for this way it is actually easier because they can match everything easily. anytime you what to rebuild an engine it is always best to buy all new moving parts to ensure they will not fail. these kits don not have cams or valve components you will have to get those seperate but it should only be about 350.00 for that. these kits are high end if you visit their site you can choose different pistons and so on to get the price down if necessary.

Re: 305 or 350

anytime we can help you know where we are. by the way i checked into that nickel-iron block you mentioned before. they did make them in the first small block v8s as an experement to see if an aloy would make them stronger. needless to say they quite making them for a reason.
