Re: 305 or 350

305 is poorly built with very little performance potential.

Re: 305 or 350

more specifically its the small bore, long stroke setup = low rpm torque production due to high piston speeds. they also use shitty small port heads and very small cams..

You can make some decent power out of the 305 with the right parts though.. Its just a lot easier to make power with the 350 and its just an all around better performance platform

Re: 305 or 350

and with the same parts and money spent, you'd get about 100HP more out of the 350 than the 305

Cause it looks like a waste of space to me and doesn't make much sense.

The 350 is a superior engine. The 4.00" bore is what sets it apart.
305's dont breathe as well for a number of reasons. The bore is smaller, something like 3.875" and 305 heads are designed for bottom end torque. The bore difference does not sound like much on paper, but it makes a huge difference in performance potential.

Thats not to say that a 305 cant be made to run well. Hot rod it like any other small block chevy and it will make decent power. From the factory, the 305 is very reliable and with proper maintainance theyll run a long time.

Theres no replacement for displacement!

Re: 305 or 350

it all depends on how much hp you want you could get your 305 to run fast

Re: 305 or 350

well either he was a very bad shifter or his engine isnt running all that great.... but i guess if you have a great start and he has a shity one its all a drivers race.... i mean sure its possible but more often than not you would get your butt handed to you. the 305s arent the fastest but they have a little chunk of power over you....

The 305 can be made as powerful as your wallet can handle and has alot more potential than your average 4 banger and while I do agree that in stock trim they are not a road animal with 170-215 power rating but by no means does this make them crappy.
