Engine Surging

ok.... what are the possible reasons for engine surging.

i have a 86 honda accord LX-i
FI 2.0 litre non-vtec

IS this something i should really be worried about?

BTW.... the 02 sensor just went bad.... but it surged beforehand to.

Re: Engine Surging

Is the o2 sensor fixed? Did you get the codes pulled from the ECU? If not, do a search for "pulling codes" and you can find out how. Bad o2 sensors could cause the engine to surge, but so could a bunch of other things, so your best bet is to pull the codes, as they are there to assist you in diagnosing the problem.

Re: Engine Surging

If there's no code to go by, it sounds like a fuel problem. Maybe the pump, filter, or electrics. Unless it does it a LOT, it'll be a little hard to diagnose.

Re: Engine Surging

The O2 sensor is still bad.... and i get one blink from the litle light under the seat. Which i believe to be the O2 sensor. it was doing this surging before the O2 sensor went bad though... that's the thing. i don't believe that the O2 sensor is the problem with the surging. Now i just checked my car and apparently all of the Antifreeze has leaked out. I drove the car and it didn't overheat at all, go figure.

Look at the back of the intake there is a fast idle valve( I think that is what it is called). The top of it is flat with two screws holding on the cover.Take off the cover.Don,t lose the o-ring!Turn the inside of it in with a big scewdriver, just snug it,you might be able to turn it with your finger. That is first place I always start.Carl

Re: Engine Surging

Fix your O2 sensor. Don't try to figure out one thing with something else malfunctioning. Things can be interrelated, and you end up chasing your tail when you assume one thing has nothing to do with another. Low coolant would cause idle problems on certain motors too. Where'd your coolant go?

Re: Engine Surging

Leave it on the car. When you get the cover off you will see a plunger in the center. You turn the outside portion.Just use your finger if you are afraid off braking it.The above post is correct, low coolant, vac leak etc.could cause surgeing. But on this model I have seen this many times. If you want to make sure this is it .Start the car with the cover off the valve and stick your finger in where the plunger is,if it idles fine that is the problem.I don,t remember ever replacing one but have tightened alot.It has no wires on it and should have two hoses going to it.Carl
