check light

Hi - I'm new to this forum, but hope someone has an answer or opinion for me.

My 96 Passat TDI w/about 120000 miles gives me no troubole, just do regular maintenance. But recently, a little yellow ligh went on, and I called VW about it as I am about an hour from the closest VW repair - was worried about driving and doing damage. I was told that it was no problem unless it was flashing (it wasn't) and that when I brought it in there would be a code to say what the problem was.

When I brought it in, they said it was nothing, just an internal problem and that they had turned off the yellow light. If it went on again, I should have the panel replaced at a cost of about $900.00, but it was OK to drive.

Well, it immediately went on again. There is no difference that I can tell in the performance of the car.

Can anyone tell me what is up? Anybody else have this experience? Can I just ignore this light unless it starts to flash? I'm on a meager retirment budget and don't want to lay out that kind of money unless it is absolutely necessary!

Help is appreciated!

Re: check light

What was the code number? Most Autozone & Advanced Auto Parts will read the code for free.
