You need something that converts 115v ac to 12v dc

Yup, a power inverter...it'd prolly be easier to sell your car amp and look at a plate amplifier. Check out www.partsexpress.com and look into some subwoofer plate amplifiers. They're not too expensive...and remember, in your home you don't need nearly as much power as you do in your car to get loud! peace

Use a PSU from a computer.

That steps down lower than 12v doesn't it? I'm telling you...at the cost you'd pay to get the proper inverter...you'd be better off selling the car amp and buying a home amplifier. I've priced it out...and it's the best and most reliable way i've found. peace

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?

Dang, I don't know much about car stuff, but I do know computers, and you will blow a PSU so fast, you'll wonder why the fire department is outside. Ok that was lame, but anyway. The 12v rails on a standard 500 watt PSU can only handle about 20 amps, if you're really lucky. You can get more amperage out of the 5v rail, but there's no point in that. In fact, there's no really easy way to convert large amounts of AC current into DC at that voltage. You can find inverters that can handle like 50 amps, in small amounts, but they're like scientific stuff and really expensive. You'd probably do better to find an old 55 amp alternator from a car and hook it up to an AC motor or something. I'd be loud as heck, but the cheapest way to get enough power at 12 volts. Please correct me if I'm total wrong, but I have searched for sources of high amperage 12 volt DC inverters and haven't found much.

It has a 12v rail.

Not sure how I'm reading this, but it looks like this one can handle 38A on the 12v rail:

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?

I'm sure it can do that much for testing, but it will have no longevity... the more power you push through it, the more quickly it will fail. Computers hardly ever need that much current at those voltages anyway, so PSU manufacturers don't make them to last at the largest current loads. 38 amps is barely enough to charge the battery, anyway.

Just a thought/consideration

My real suggestion. Just drop like $800 on a really nice HTS.

Re: Stupid question, can i hook my subs up to my stereo in my room?

hehehehe... yeah, I think he wants to avoid spending money in the first place... if you want nice surround speakers, go with logitech... 500 Watt system with all the inputs you could ever want, and it's only like $250 maybe less now. An indoor sub rated at 188 watts will rattle windows and shake rooms just fine. I think it was Logitech Z-680 that's the 5.1 that I'm thinking of.

Get a plate amp from Partsexpress man, I just picked one up for $115 shipped... 250 watts rms...that's really all you'd need for those especially in house!

I believe you're right. It's receiving rave reviews from both consumers and reviewers alike. I was tempted to purchase it, but I'll just stick with using my HTS in my room that sounds like crap.
