please help trans.leak 2000 caravan

This morning I went outside to see a puddle of red fluid in the driveway after my husband left for work. We just moved to Ohio and we don't know anyone here. I don't know what I should ask the mechanic(I don't want to come across like I don't know anything!) Is there anything I could check for, that might give me a clue to what the problem could be? The fluid is clean, the puddle was fresh and about 4 inches across. What should I look for if I do a visual inspection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: please help trans.leak 2000 caravan

Leaks can occur anywhere. To inspect, shutoff the car and park it for an hour (so as it will puddle on the ground). Inspect by locating where the drips are coming from. If it is near the radiator area, there are steel oil cooler lines that may have rusted out. If on the transmission, it could just be the transaxle seals. If you decide to take it to a mechanic, you need only tell him that transmission fluid is leaking - he will find where.

update

Thanks for the advice, I took it to the mechanic this am. It turned out to be the selonoid circuit? and a leak in the transmission pan. 320 bucks sure is better than needing a new transmission!
