1991 Silvia SR20DE Mods

hey,

ive got a 1991 Silvia with a SR20DE in it which is completely stock at the moment (i do mean for the moment) and i was wondering what all you guys would do to get max proformance out of it with out turboing it?.

and
is it possible to just unbolt the orignal air filter box and bolt on a pod filter ?

ive been looking into it and there is alot of unknowns about it, (alot of extra pipes going to places u cant get to, to see whats there with out removing panels ect.) and since i cant get a manual at all i thought id ask here before i did anything.

cheers

Re: 1991 Silvia SR20DE Mods

well yeah you could start with a new filter but the problem with that is the piping will still restrict air flow.. so it won't help you very much at all.. get some intake piping and you'll notice a huge sound difference along with maybe 5hp (max).. after that, get headers, full 2.5" exhaust, then it gets expensive.. if you want to change internals and raise comression then you'd get quite a bit of power out of that but that'll cost you $2500US (don't know how much australian).. i don't know if they make superchips for the sr20de but you might find something like that on ebay.. if you wanna really feel this power then get new suspension (shocks & springs OR coilovers).. that could be a start

cheers for that,

and yeah ive seen the plus sides to increasing compression ratios. my bro has a Fiat 124 sports that his building it up for the track and i tell ya that thing flys. i feel real sorry for all the guys out that think they stand a chance against him when they rock up beside him.

anyways.

with the intake is there a way to upsize the air flow meter ? i know u can with the turbo version but i cant find anything for N/A would anyone know if there is a way to increase the internal size of the airflow meter?

cheers agian

well there's the mass air flow sensor, i think thats what you mean, and yes you can put one on from a mustang cobra, q45, z32.. lots of different engines that flow lots of air..

that fiat sounds kinda cool.. got any pics of it??

Re: 1991 Silvia SR20DE Mods

very true.. didn't even think of that..
http://www.todaracing.com/products/n...ngine_kit.html
that kit will lower compression though.. i've never heard of sr20de stroker kits but i'm sure they're out there..
why is it you don't want to turbo?

Geez... what company made a 2.2 liter kit for an SR20DE? I forget... it was a Japanese company that made a demo car (drift? track? I don't remember...) but it was putting out some crazy #'s. I'll get back to you guys on that one...

i will turbo it soon enough but for now i want get her running as well as i can with out turboing it.

plus it also comes down to cash. for the amount i would have to pay to get a half cut with all i need i can get the N/A motor done up completely. plus the other thing is that there sint many N/A cars around here and it would be sweet to built up one that can challange the turbo's.

will the Mass Air Flow Meters off the mustang plus straight up or will i have to rewire the connector ?

umm ill try and get some pics..... were taken the fiat up to the track tomorrow so i may have a short movie as well but i dont have a site to upload it to. and when i said i knew about the advantages of increasing the compression ratio, my bros fiat is running 11:1 compression at the moment and the webers arnt even tuned right yet. he cant find anyone good enough to tune them

cheers again, ill post some pics as where back from the track.

would you or anyone else know who makes the super chips sets for the Silvia ?

ok, first of all, don't spend all that money raising the compression if you're eventually going to turbo. you don't want high compression with turbo, your engine won't last long. either keep the compression where it is (or lower it) and go turbo or go N/A and raise the compression.. i mean, unless you can rebuild every weekend, its not worth it..

the mafs from a cobra needs an adapter harness and even if you find one, you'll need to remap your ecu. the easiest way to go with a mafs, as far as i know, is to find a z32 and buy the adapter kit off www.jspec.com .. it makes for a very easy install.. i don't know if an adapter kit has been made for a cobra mafs but if you're confident then try it.

Re: 1991 Silvia SR20DE Mods

It's not really a good idea at all to try to turbo an NA engine. For the amount of money you are better off just swapping out the motor and/or buying a whole new car with a turbo already. It's just way better in the long run.

Another option is looking into superchargers if you have got the money...

But I would stay NA and just beef up that SR20DE. Like I said: A stroker kit is an option. But before hand... I would get a better intake sysytem, header, test-pipe (not sure how your emission laws work), and a very good exhaust (maybe APEXi). Another overlooked gizmo is an Air/Fuel Controller... I recommend APEXi's SAFC-II. An AFC is a wonderful tuning tool... expect anywhere from 20-35HP + if it's tuned right.

Re: 1991 Silvia SR20DE Mods

yeah what im doing is getting the SR20DE running like is, then after ive got it all done and i still want more power (which is very likely) ill either supercharge or turbo it.. but in looking at that im looking at mass amounts of cash and time off the road to do the conversion so i will most probley build a N/A motor and get a Turbo as well. atleast that way the car wont be off the road and i can work on the spare motor

cheers for the help guys.
