what's in a 120K tune-up?

my car has 112K miles and I've only had it for 1000 miles so I want to give it a tune up. I was wondering what parts should be replaced in a 120K tune up. Parts total cost estimate? Labor? Could i do it myself?

Re: what's in a 120K tune-up?

its the same as 60k tuneup.. im sure but not 100% positive... but you might need water pump, timing belt, timing belt hydraulic tensioner, timing tensioner pulley, and the tensioner pulley tool. If you are familiar with your engine and know what your doing than you can do it yourself ( i did mine myself its a tight space to work with ). http://www.3sxperformance.com/stock.asp they sell the for 91-99 DOHC TT & NA: $379.95 and
91-99 SOHC: $244.95

Re: what's in a 120K tune-up?

if u replace the timing belt ($180) u might as well do the water pump while ur at it - cause its right there an it isnt really that much fun doin either...you gotta take a handfull of things off the driverside of the engine when doin it- i dont remember what the w-pump costs . but i would get it done.. mine went 287k miles before i had to replace anything - first think i had to replace @ 287k miles was the Thermostat ($45) then the pwater pump gasket went so i replaced that an a new seal($?) then i did the timing belt while i was there - the rest of the car is all orig. i am second owner - bought it from some old dude that looked like if he coughed wrong he would die... he has service records an tune up recipes from 2 months after he bought the car - he had the oil changed every month even if it didnt need it - had the car fully inspected every 2 months buy the dealer that imported it for him .... so i am happy i got it - it was a well taken care of car...an i am only doin the same - just can't afford the monthly oil change - i do it when ever its needed usually over a month though..

the tune up prob. does a check on the injectors for leaks clogs ... an the will prob do a new wire an plug job... shit like that

tight space...yes. trick wrists? no way. its really no that tight of a space. just b/c its an import we like to say its soo complicated to work on when in reality its not. if you follow the directions listed on team3s.com here: http://www.team3s.com/60k.htm and here: http://www.team3s.com/FAQtiming.htm you should be good. however, it would be smart to read up on other ppl's documented 60k services like Erik Gross: http://www.team3s.com/~egross/ -->go to 3000GT>Maintenance>timing belt replacement.

Erik's page is good b/c he has a bunch of pics to let you visualize what you'll need to do. i did the 60k service myself as well. but i was particular and wanted to do it right, so i triple check my timing and everything, thus it took me the better part of 8 hours. also, extra coolant is a good idea as you lose some if/when you remove the water pump.

but really, just b/c its a long job doesn't mean its that hard. just have some mechanical know-how, and you're good. also, a friend to help with the timing is nice as you'll need 4 hands to hold the cogs/belt.

Re: what's in a 120K tune-up?

its tighter than any other import i have worked on - like for say any honda - vw - nissan maxima an sent.
i opend the hood for alot of people an they all say man that looks complicated - i tell them its really not its just really packed on the top end of the engine... but i found the one bolt on the water pump to be a bit finicky that is the reason i said (trick wrists) figure of speech.... it is a tight engine to work on but i my book its totally worth it - these cars are amazing for how awsome they perform with such small displacement.

tru, i get your figure of speech. but i found it quite simple once all the other parts were removed (a/c lines, cruise control, VICS, front left tire, access panel, alternator). after those are removed, there's plenty of space. yea, water pump bolts can be tricky. i had trouble finding one of the inner timing belt cover bolts the was underneath and a little behind the pwr steering pump. i was soo pissed when i found it, that i threw it away...wasn't gonna deal with that again! but ya, most likely harder than most imports. although a challenge at first, once you've done it once, its always easier the following times. fun for me, at least.

Re: what's in a 120K tune-up?

When I do my 60k, my car is going on a diet, cruise control and a few other things are coming out for good.
