That question has alot of variables to it. Before upgrading the exhaust, you should definitely get a new intake otherwise you will lose more backpressure and low-end torque. It also depends what kind of exhaust you get and how large the piping is. Bolt-on mods generally don't give you significant gains. You might be looking at 8-10 hp if you include the intake. However, I really am not the expert on the matter so don't take my word for it.

Re: exhaust mods

There's an exhaust comparison in the FAQ section, it's good stuff...

Re: exhaust mods

Just buy a VR4 exhaust and test pipe and a 9" K&N intake, all for less than $200 (not including shipping).

Re: exhaust mods

I've been wanting to get a VR4 exhaust system but haven't been able to find one. Anyone selling one here? Also, I was actually just talking to my friend today and he was telling me that he got an exhaust system that was bolt-on. I always thought that a whole system would require welding!?! :o/

Re: exhaust mods

There should be a part out thread on 3SI with them, otherwise just make a post in the parts wanted thread. I think you just bolt them up and the seals are made with gaskets instead of welding. I havent heard much about the hangers that support the piping but they shoudl be easy aswell.

Re: exhaust mods

Most aftermarket exhausts like ATR and borla are bolt-on

Re: exhaust mods

The less backpresure there is, the less low end torque you have. Though on the higher RPM range you'll benefit more. If you really want improvments get a mandrel bent cat-back single exit exhaust, with a high flow cat. It'll cut down on weight, free up any air flow restrictions, and stuff. As far as the size, for NA's its not bad staying stock size.

There is everything you need to know about putting a VR4 catback on a NA.

As for losing low end torque I dont buy it one bit. Backpressure is simplely overrated with these cars. I was running with a broken dp for over a year and I lost almost zero torque. I just installed a 3sx dp last weekend and figured I would pick up a little from having a whole exhaust again. I picked up nothing but top end. BTW 2.5" is stock exhaust size on NA's.
