2003 Paint

I have a 2003 Silverado z71 and just had a rhino liner installed and when the pulled the masking tape off it took off about a foot of the clear coat. They claim this only happens when the paint is fresh (not the case) or a bad paint job. They want Chevy to warrenty the paint. Has anyone else had issues with the paint on their Silverado?

This sounds like the aftermath of a previous repaint, not that it couldn't happen to factory paint. Are you sure that the truck has never had a repaint on the bedside?

Even if you purchased the truck new, it still doesn't mean that it hasn't had a repaint. Some vehicles have repaint work done before they even leave the factory. I would think that your paint would still be covered by warranty though. Of coruse you'll have to check with your dealer to find out for sure.

I'm the 2nd owner, and i asked the dealership i bought it from and they said it had not been wrecked or repainted. I called the orignial owner and they said it had not been wrecked or repainted. I looked it up on carfax and carfax has no record of it being wrecked. I took it to the chevy dealer today and they said they had never seen anything like this before, but would cover it. So it will be fixed next week. I do find it hard to believe that the factory paint would do that, but i can find anything to indicate it has been repainted.

paint

I have an '04 Silverado... Recently I had a to have the passenger side painted because some little @!$%#!'ers threw stones at the side of it... Now I notice on the drivers side fender flare, there's a small flaw. It looks like the top coat was "peeled" when the truck was taped off. Any thoughts?

I talked to a body shop and they told me that clear coat can come off if the tape is left on to long. i asked what to long was and he told me 2 days or more. How long was the truck in the shop?
As an update to my truck i did some research and found the body shop the original owner took the truck to to fix the "scratch" she addmits to having fixed. I call the shop and asked what work they did to the truck. turns out that little scratch was so little the body shop had to paint the rt front fender, rt front door, and REPLACE the rt rear door!! Turns out her son hit 2 parked Cars!! Insurance had to pay for the whole thing. What i don't understand is why CarFax showed the truck was clean. Also, the body shop claims they didn't paint the side of the bed, but it has been repainted. So i guess i'll never know what happened to side of the bed.

The tape will harden faster if they leave it in the sun for a few hours. If they do that, it could take the clear coat off when the tape is removed.

From my experience, the rhino lining people are not gental when they put on the lining. When I got my truck back, it had scratches on both sides and even the cab and a dent in the bed rail. But they did fix it for me. If anyone is thinking about getting it done then be sure to check it before you drive the truck home.

The Paint is Crap

I have a 2003 Silverado (Blue), if you look it too hard it scratches the paint. My previous "95" Silverado looked better than this one when I turned it in. My driver seat material is already worn out and the check engine light comes on repeatably. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Ram.

As much as I understand your frustration, a RAM is not an upgrade.

Agreed on that one for sure. A ram is still better than a damn F-150... don't get me strated. Anyway, I just had Rhino sprayed in on Tuesday in my '02... no apparent problems with the paint. Sorry to hear it, but I am glad they will be covering it. When they spray a bedliner like that, do they sand the surfaces to be coated, or what?

Re: 2003 Paint

My understanding is that they remove all the paint from the bed and then score the metal so that the liner has something to stick to.
As another note, the seats in my 2003 are also worn and it has 22,000 miles on it. In fact the driver's seat has a small hole worn in it.

As I write this e-mail my truck is in the dealership getting the seat cover replaced, and the SES light reset again. Where did your seat wear at? Mine was on the driver seat back, high over my right shoulder. I'm a short guy, my body doesn't even touch that part. The material just disapeared.

Re: 2003 Paint

Mine wore in the "seat" of the seat. the cloth developed a bit of a wrinkle, and it wore on that. I just bought the truck last week, and it's a low mileage one owner thing, so maybe some big fat dude had it.
