SPI engine mods?

hi, i recently bought a 2001 focus se sedan 5 speed. i paid $5,000 for it with 30,000 miles on it the body had a couple dings in it but nothing that couldn't be worked out. i bought the car because i wanted to build my stereo system in it, but now with that done i've been gettin itchy to do more things to it, but i've never done any kind of engine mods before. so here's my problem, all i read about in these posts are about the duratec and the zetec engines. I'm pretty sure mines an SPI, so are there any mods i can do to that or am i going to end up sinking a ton of cash to beef up an engine that shouldn't be beefed, and is it even worth it with that type of engine? like i said i've never done any mods before, just basic fix it stuff. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Re: SPI engine mods?

There are some people, though they are rare, who would defend the SPI, but I really think that really modding out a SPI is pretty pointless...it's very hard to find good, quality parts for the SPI to begin with, and even then, you're starting with around 110hp, as opposed to 130 in the Zetec, plus the Zetec really makes a lot more torque. If you do plan to mod out the SPI, then be prepared to spend a good deal of time finding good, quality parts. If you're really serious about this, then there's always the Zetec swap route.

Thumbs up Spi

Well, the spi engine is a really good engine. Its been around since 1979, in europe, so ive read. there are parts for this engine even though most parts you would have to purchase overseas. The engine is a favorite among autocrossers in well, europe. The older escortgt, 87-90, had a 1.9l spi engine and was pretty tough. If you are looking for infomation try
www.Focaljet.com

Enter forums scroll down and there will be a forum all about the SPI and it has a strong following.

I had an SPI, but traded it in for an SVT focus

good luck

Re: SPI engine mods?

the SPI is a great motor for going turbo. it really likes boost. their are more 220+whp turbo SPI's then zetecs.

Anyone that says a SPI is "a waste of time" doesn't know jack about the motor
