Oil Change every 7,000 miles?

I was talking to my friend. He said he was takin his car in for an oil change for the 1st. time.

1st. time? I asked...(he has had his car since sept) he now has close to 10,000 miles on it.

He said he only changes his oil every 7-8,000 miles. He says that people overrate how important change of oil is. Well at that point I just stop talkin to him about this subject.

He has a Civic03 SI. hatchback. Is it good for thos engines to run that long between oil changes.

He drives about 33 miles a day in traffic (stop 'n' go).

I heard that some newer engines can do this but can his civic last long like this....plus it's a Standard...and he really never has been to smooth with it. (if you know what I'm saying )

Re: Oil Change every 7,000 miles?

On most of Honda's cars they recomend the a oil change every 7,500 miles. But I personaly would rather change it every 3,000 miles.
Nobody ever hurt their motor by changing the oil too soon.

5000 on 01-05 civics. thats what we do at the dealer. The stupid sales people tell there customers 7500. they are clueless and asy whatever sells cars

When in doubt look in the owners manual and remeber you almost never drive in normal conditions

Re: Oil Change every 7,000 miles?

Even the manual for my 02 si said to change it every 7something thousand miles, right then i looked at it like it was crazy and asked it if it was, it hasnt answered back yet....but the oil in my car get changed out every 3000 miles. I dont trust oil sitting in my car for any longer than that especially the way i drive.

Re: Re: Oil Change every 7,000 miles?

7500 miles for "Normal Conditions" which is rarely driven in. the owners manual will break down the difference between "normal" and "severe" which most of us deal with. In that case Honda recommends every 3750 miles on the newer car.

Oil changes are the cheapest insurance on a engine, new ones aint cheap and not covered under warranty without proof of proper maintenance.

It's said full synthetic last longer but I still change it every 3,000 miles or 3 months.

Just because it's Honda doesn't it mean it will run forever. The key is proper maintenance.

OK thanx.

Still....oil's protection wears off at about 4000miles Right?

(Unless it's Synth.) Therefore your driveing with more vibration, and less protective coverage of vital parts. WHY?

Just cause you can, doesn't mean you should.

I change mine every 5,000 miles so it's easier to keep track of and that's what the honda mechanic guys said to do also.

Synthetic's protect far better than conventional oil. Without synthetic's 6,000HP nitro monters wouldn't be possible or 20,000 RPM's out of a Formula 1 engine.

7000 might be ok once it's older, but during its first 10,000 miles I would change oil and filter at least 3 times because it's going through its critical break-in period.

Preferably once at 2000 miles, once again at 5000, and then once again at 10,000 and from then on once every 5-7000 seems fine.

I change mine every 7000 and it comes out clean when I do change it.
I am using Mobile 1 Full synthetic Oil. I swear by it. Used it in all previous cars and got 170K plus miles out of the engines. Plus a slight proformance increase(lower friction). It costs a bit more $4-5 dollars a quart compared to $.90/quart for conventional but well worth the small investment.

Your using synthetic oil which is supposed to be sitting in there longer. Dino oil should be changed every 3k miles at least I dont care what the manual says. Take a look at any of the dino oil in any car after 3k miles, youll want to change it. If you drive like I do then it should probably be changed every 1k miles lol. Synthetic I couldnt ever see myself going more than 5k without changing it, i just dont trust anything in my engine that long. But thats just me.
