Unhappy 89 Warngler with Electrical Issues

Well this was supposed to be a simple project has turned into a nightmare. I have an 89 Wrangler. The original problem was no headlights. After some schematic tracing and ohmeter/voltmeter checks I found and replaced a bad High Beam switch and we have now have lights. However now I do not have turn signals or brake lights. I retraced all my steps and do not see anything I could have done to effect this. I have, for the moment, left the metal connecting rod from the turnsignal handle to the high beam switch disconnected.

There are two flashers in the fuse box. With the hazards flasher installed (left one) I get the front and side flashers CONTINOUSLY flashing no matter if the hazard switch on the cloumn is engaged or not and I also can get the tail lights to flash if I reverse the bulb in the socket.

I take the flasher out and actions cease, but now I have no turn signals or brake lights no matter what I do.

I am thinking one of two issues:

1. Component wise, the only thing common to the brake lights and turn signal is the multifunction switch.

2. I have a nasty short somewhere

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
