SR20DET Problems

I am buying a S13 w/ the swap already done in it from a friend. He blew a ring in his first SR20 for some odd reason. But then he got a new one put in. It started and ran and smoked when reved but then they ajusted the timing. No more smoke ran fine. Drove it across town home and it started having problems here and there shortly there after. Now the car starts and smokes again, compression is fine. I haven't gotten the car yet so I haven't went through it and messed with anything but can anyone think of things I should check when I get it? It would be great to have afew things in mind other then wireing right off the bat. I know he had some wireing issues with his first swap some wires were shorting on the firewall but after they fixed that it ran great for over a year. Anways any help would be great THANKS

I wouldnt buy a swapped car... oh wait.. I did... and it sucked. I'll never do it agian people buy the SR20 to dog it, Start from scrach so you know what you have

Very good point, only lucky thing here is that this is a JUST swapped motor he's only put like 50 miles on it since it was swapped so you end up with the same thing you would of had EXCEPT. I have a HKS downpipe and exhaust Greddy bov and turbo timer and profec B an Extra engine with all parts a body kit that I don't even want (so I can sell it) and so much other extra shit and I'm only paying $2500 for car and all.... I dont' think anyone can beat that...
