Re: 90 Ford Escort Engine Upgrade Help

Keep the 1.9....it's a very good, reliable engine. You could always stuff a 2.3 in there, but they have less power, actually, and no upgradability. You could also stuff a 3.0 vulcan engine in the thing, but they're only good for 130 hp, and they have a LOT more weight. Keep the lightweight 1.9. You can have the engine bored (probably around 70 bucks, depending on your location), and have the head make the combustion chamber smaller, and upping compression. If you have the GT, congrats, you already have 110 hp at the wheels with all things running, so add a good 25 hp, probably 30 to that, and you've got your real power. If it's manual, congrats again, it'll be a good one. You can do a lot, man. Look on Nopi.com...I found a lot of parts for the 90's. But for cheap power, I'd go with increasing compression and bore size....you can bore .040" or 1mm over no problem. The crank is plenty strong for that, too, but if you get it turned and balanced, then it's all the better. Lots of ways....be creative. If you have any questions, let me know.

Re: 90 Ford Escort Engine Upgrade Help

The thing with older cars (as in not within the past 3 years) is when they were made engine noise was a big deal. So get rid of some of it. Like your intake, get an aftermarket one. Or just take of the air baffles.

I have the weapon R one, it comes with all the stuff you need to fit it in. This includes the stuff you need to keep your maf on.

And while your at it take a look at PaceSetter they have one awsome exaust system. I had the headers and exaust system on my rally car and wow. (Cat less might I add. But dont go too far cause thats not street legal.) The great thing about this system is that it will not attract any un wanted attention from the poe poes, but it will give you a great sound.

Any thing to do with air flow on an escort will give you plenty of extra ponies.

Re: 90 Ford Escort Engine Upgrade Help

You're driving a 2nd gen car, Escort Service. It's a different engine, unless the guy has a GT. He's got a 1st gen, a 1990, the last of the 1st gen. If he's got a base model engine, he won't have a maf sensor.
