87 Accord Idle problem
I just bought an 87 Accord. It runs and drives great, and only has 140k miles. The only problem is the idle. When cold started, it will start at about 2000rpm, steadily climb to close to 3000rpm, and stay there for a minute or two. After it warms up a bit I can punch it and it will come down to about 1500rpm, and then once it gets fully warm it will idle steadily at about 1300. I took it for an oil change today and had the Chrysler dealer right here close to the house look at it. The mech said that he tried to adjust the idle but could not get it to change at all. I'm pretty sure this is a carburated model since he said he tried to adjust the idle. I looked under the seat with the key turned on to see if the ecu was holding any codes, but I don't see anything. I see the plastic cover, but I don't know if I am looking in the right place for the led or what. Could someone please shed some light on this for me? This is my first non- American car, and I don't know a whle lot about cars in the first place. Please help. Thanks....

Look under the hood at the tune up label it will tell you high idle is 2500 plus or minus 500.Or the owners manual if you have one.Sounds normal for a carbed honda.Carl

If it is a carbed model, most have a throttle kicker that raises idle when the A/C is on. Sometimes they get stuck, overriding the base idle setting. Then you can mess with base idle all you want, won't change.
To determine if that's it, you'd have to actually get an eyeball on the point where the tang on the throttle plate rests on the base idle stop, and see if it actually is sitting on it after warming up, or if it is "hovering" over it. If not on the stop, something (idle kicker, choke pull off) is holding it open. Then you gotta work from there to figure out why. If that one is feedback controlled, a vacuum leak will make them want to idle high too.

You may be on the right track with this. I have messed with the throttle stop and I have it all the way off to where it is not even touching and it still idles high. I've never heard of 2500 rpms being normal at any temperature. Lets put it this way, when I leave work in the morning, I can ride about 1 mile without touching the gas and top out at about 40 mph. That can't be normal.
