Another stupid question
Alright, I live in spokane washington and hear loud civics all day, the more and more i look at them. they are just welded on mufflers. i want an actual exhaust system and i have been doing my homework. my question is......(greddy, apexi, hks, dc sports) when the web site describes the exhaust as a "cat-back" what do they mean? i'm pretty sure they mean that exhaust system starts at the cat-con on back. i'm not sure. and i want to know if this is how all systems are or are there some with the cat's included and its more of a header-back. in washington it's strictly illegal to remove a working catylitic converter. if all the systems are from the cat on back then would my best bet be to get a apexi exhaust cat-back system and then get a custom straight pipe and remove the Cat my self? thanks for you time guys!

Re: Another stupid question
cat-back means all the piping, resonator and muffler after the cat.
A testpipe in place of the cat will get you sounding like all of those loud ass civics with just mufflers.

Need more Detail
I know it's 50 state legal but alot metro's in some states make you take emissions test every other year, and without the cat it would make it hard to pass and get Tabs. on the other hand i hurd its very easy for our eco-civics to pass without sweating. so let me get this straight. are all exhaust systems (suposing they are considered "cat-back") like greddy, dc sports, apexi and hks are basicaly bolt-on from the rear of the cat and include a muffler? so if i were to buy the greddy EVO system for my 92 civic ex 4dr 5 spd it would come with everything needed after the catilytic converter? then get some dc sports headers! where is a good place online that sells aftermarket straight pipe from the headers to the cat-back system? WWW. .COM? thanks for the help guys. i need answers on everything because i'm not finding them anywhere else!

If you really want a testpipe and want to sound like the rest of the ricers just get a muffler shop to weld in a 2.25" pipe in place of the cat. Shouldn't cost more than $50.

oh my bad guys. i miss read, i was at work at the time. it's not ILlegal to own/drive/buy a car with out a catilytic converter. useally it's based on passing an emissions test. if passed you are set, i hurd a rumor that honda's will pass in most states. if you dont pass, there is always that option of the oil adative that helps you pass emissions. i was really looking for a light weight chrome plated or powder coated pipe. i've seen the pipes that the muffler mart down the street make and they are shitty. what kinda hp gains would you guess a greddy evo cat-back system would give me from a d16z6 with a short ram intake?

Re: Another stupid question
It's illegal to remove any kind of smog equipment from the car that it came with from the factory. This does include the cat...I believe.
You won't see more than a 1-3hp gain from an exhaust.

Re: Another stupid question
unless the age of the car is older than 20 years i think? they dont care about emissions at that state of age...i heard about my one freinds truck taht didnt need a cat to pass inspection.

Re: Another stupid question
if your going with basic IHE, then save your cat and save the air. a testpipe is a waste of your money.

aight, i got to thinking, i'm pretty sure that next year i'm going to get a 98 integra gsr with around 60-65,000 miles on it. maybe i should just get a muffler if a cat-back system would only add 1 hp. i'm trying to keep it as simple as possible. probly just get a cheep as muffler, cheap rims and paint them black. i don't know, what do you guys think? is it really worth 600 bones for a cat-back on a d16 when it's only gonna give me 1-3 hp?

Re: Another stupid question
why not just save your money to get that swap then.
Cheap is not the way you want to go with your car.
