2000 Silverado Exhaust and air filter question
I just bought my first truck. A 2000 Silverado 4x4 5.3.
Here are my 2 questions: The truck ran great the first week and then I started hearing a popping.. I noticed it was a fist size hole than just broke through a rusted area in the muffler. I took it to a shop and he said he could put in a new pipe for around 120.00 I was planning on having this done Saturday when Im off work.. But.. I just found this forum.. I noticed one of the first two things You guys mention is an exhaust upgrade!.. I see several people mentioning 40's.. Of course Im new to this and have no idea exactly what that is.. but I figured the exhaust guy will know.. But exactly what do I need.. It doesnt have to be loud.. I just want my muffler fixed.. I just figured why I was at it.. I would check with You guys to see exactly what I should do while in in the process of having it repaired and how will it benifit me. Question 2: I see the first thing mentioned I should do (other than fix my muffler) is put in a K & N air filter.. I just looked them up for my truck and I see one for like 250.00 and another for 35.00.. The more expensive one looks like it comes with a hose piece ect.. and the cheaper one is just a filter.. Im assuming the 250.00 is the one I need right? Thanks in advance.. I Love this truck so far.. |

Re: 2000 Silverado Exhaust and air filter question
As for the intake, yeah you want he cold air intake, that is the $250 one. I ave an airaid cold air intake that is basically the same and it was $100 less. But they are both good so if you want he K&N name than get it.
As for exhaust, the possibilities are endless. Single, dual...etc. I would go with some sort of custom dual exhaust system with some stainless steel tips. The dual exhaust system on my truck in my signature below cost me about $210 including tips. However, I don't have any mufflers. The flowmaster 40 series mufflers are loud, so I have been told. A 70 series might be better if you don't want it to be loud. Any competent shop that does exhaust work shoud be able to build you a system just tell them what you want, ask for their advice, etc.

Re: 2000 Silverado Exhaust and air filter question
Had a Flowmaster 40 3" inlet dual 2.5" outlets, 2.5" pipe and 3.5" tips for $250.

Since you've already experienced rusting, go ahead and get a stainless steel muffler.

Want to hear what it might sound like with some different set ups?
Try http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/...egory&cat_id=6 and poke around in there. The link is directly to their Chevy 5.3L forum. |
