Replaced motor & tranny but won't turn over

I just completed putting in the motor and tranny in a 1995 Aurora. I have hooked up all electrical connectors. When I turn the key to the on position all dash lights come on computer says all monitored systems ok but I have nothing when I try to start (very slight click) I know the started is not getting the signal to engage. I have tried adjusting the neutral saftey switch, turn the car over while moving the shifter position but nothing. What is the best way to start the trouble shooting this problem or where should I start looking. The battery I just installed is a fully charged new one.

Where did you get the engine...........have you put a socket and a big bar on the crankshaft pulley to make certain it is not locked up?

I found out the problem with car not turning over. Connection cam unplugged but I still have some problems. When I turn the key to on position I hear a clicking noise (about 20 times) coming from the throttle body and it clicks about 20 times after you turn they key back off. The car will not shift into third gear. The car idles extremely high and bangs pretty good when you put it into gear. Whn I bought the car the lasdy told me that a tranny cable was the problem when she took it into the transmission place. She said this happened when somebody tried to steal the car. Does anybody have any idea what cable that would be. I have replaced the speed sensor, torque pressre switch, shift solenoids when I had it out. The check engine light is on but I will probably have to take it in to dump the codes. I have a spare motor (cracked block) that I can use some parts if needed. Any ideas from this forum would be great. Thanks in advance

You're a brave soul to tackle such a massive job.....I had a shop where we replaced engines so I have an appreciation for what you're doing.
One more question....was your replacement engine out of a '95 model car? Did your connectors all match up with sensors and such on the replacement engine? They love to change the location of sensors from model to model.
I have a set of shop manuals for the '95 and I will be happy to look up specific questions you might have. I just bought a 95 car and hopefully will not need the manuals much longer as I intend to sell the car. The mauals will be for sale at that time. It was a much much bigger job then I thought it was going to be. This was my first tranverse motor job and also the first time I have ever taken a tranny apart to swap parts etc. The motor was out of a 95 Aurora so every thing matched up. The motor seems fine (No knock tic etc) so hopefully I just have to figure out a couple of sensors or computer problems?

These cars have loyal owners even though they have several inherent problems such as oil leaks and electric seat problems, etc. They handle extremely well, are fast off the mark and have great looks. I didn't know about the oil leak problems when I bought this car but I got it cheap because the ignition module was only allowing 4 cylinders to fire and it had a radiator leak.

I probably will never buy another unless I get it for a "steal" price.

The clicking on the TB is the ISC motor. Its an actuator with a bolt on the end of it that presses up against the TB lever. It isnt set correctly so it is ratcheting back and forth trying to find the correct location. You can adjust this by turning the bolt on the end of the ISC motor until you finds the right location.

Do you have the repair manual ? If you do there is a procedure in there for resetting the throttle body sensor. There is also an idle relearn you can do manually as well. Anytime you work on the TB you need to do these procedures. Ill post them for you below. Maybe it will help.


TPS reset-

1. Turn key to ON position. ( dont start motor) Then turn to off position. Wait 20 seconds.

2. Repeat step 1.

3. Repeat step 1. Your done.


Idle relearn-

1. Start car and bring to normal operating temp.

2. Let car run for 5 min at normal temp. ( 220*)

3. Bring up the RPM's to over 3500 and hold it there a few seconds. Let it drop back to normal.

3. Put car in D and hold it there for 2 minutes.

4. Your done.


This might help smooth out your problems. Atleast it couldnt hurt and it definately needs to be done if you had the entire engine out.

GL to you. These Northstar engines are pretty complex. If you know a Cadillac mechanic I suggest you ask him for input as they are the most knowledgable on these motors.

I also suggest a forum named www.caddyinfo.com. There is a wealth of knowledge regarding the Northstar motors on that site and a few engineers frequent it. Including a guy named Bbob that helped engineer these motors with GM.

Thanks I will follow those procedures tonight to see if this will make it idle smoother. I noticed the retainer (on the firewall) for those cables is broken and not holding the cables in place so that also be part of my problem so I ordered the part. Until it arrives a will secure them the cables in the correct spot (Somehow)so I can get this beast on the road. I have the check engine light and the tranny shifting into third to deal with after I follow your procedures. Thanks for the Help it is much appreciated!!!
